Picture of my hand, with the palm and fingers bright pink and purple from the interactions of different ph levels in cochineal and madder dyes. I am chopping up madder root I pulled from the active dyebath to get maximum color from it. A wooden cutting board with a small mound of chopped roots is in the frame, along with an ulu-style knife used for the root chopping

Check out these wild colors! Bright pink cochineal+vinegar after rinse, then chopping up madder root made purple (higher ph in the roots or metallurgy of knife?). Yes, I have gloves, I just forget/don't care to put them on.

Two strings of pennant shaped bunting hanging on a wall with weathered wooden siding. The buntings are three to each string and dyed variegated gray with rose leaves in an iron pot. They have circular cut outs in the center showing patchwork made from many small pieces of botanically dyed fabric in blues, reds, pinks, olive green, yellow, orange, and grays.

Me from the neck down holding a tote bag I made. I’m standing in snow wearing black jeans, an orange sweater, and a shawl I knit wound around my neck like a scarf. The tote bag is made from cotton ticking fabric and dyed with black tea and a light wash of indigo over top. The pocket is a blue and orange star patchwork.

Me standing with my back to the camera with the Polychrome quilt wrapped around me, staring into the winter landscape. The patchwork is many strips of different colors sewn on the diagonal in block. The blocks are arranged to form diamond patterns. All fabric hand dyed with botanicals by me, except the bright pink which was dyed with cochineal by an old friend.

Teñir con cúrcuma ha salido: BIEN.

I added more fresh #goldenrod to the dye pot. Then I experimented with pH and adding iron (which I created using rusty nails and such). The iron experiment netted a light olive green color. Pretty cool.

I refreshed my vat and got some lovely darker colors. I wore gloves this time. It was a little hard to get good photos because the wind suddenly came up. #indigodye #indigo #botanicaldye

A student in a recent workshop gifted me Tansy from her garden, and I got some great color from it.

Would love to connect with other #japaneseindigo #indigo #persicariatinctoria growers and dyers.

Plants germinated from seeds I collected, from the 100+ plants I grew last year, are in the ground.

Looking forward to the four day #indigofest on the Washington Coast in August.

Not a lot of knitting happened lately due to a tennis arm combined with a serious lack of energy. But I'm finally getting back to it. 🧶

This fringed scarf was hand-dyed with cochineal extract, creating a deep red shade. Then the scarf was rolled and steamed with logwood chips creating a dark blue speckled pattern.

Cochineal (Dactylopius coccus) is a parasitic, scaled insect that feeds on prickly pear cacti.

If anyone wonders how it went.. we're having a serious case of sad beige 😅 might've not used enough red beets tbh.
Mordant was alum, which usually works quite well.

To achieve this beautiful green shade, I heated this silk scarf in a bath of marigolds. Next, I dyed it with logwood extract (blue/purple). The silk was also steamed with a variety of plants to create the speckled pattern. #botanicaldye #logwood

This is a picture of 4 pieces of cloth hanging wet from the rings of a ladder after coming out of the dye bath. 3 of the cloths are square and where dyed by wrapping rose leaves up in the cloth as a bundle and then cooked in an iron pot. The iron modifies the pigment and leaves the cloth a beautiful mottled gray with outlines of the leaves and sometimes a little green pigment from the leaves. The 4th cloth is a long scarf, gray with circles of white. My hand is holding it up slightly. You can see fallen leaves on the ground and stacked wood in the background.

This is a picture of a finished and dry bandanna laid out on a flat rock. It is different shades of gray and has a diamond and triangle pattern dyed into it because of how it was folded before dyeing.

Here are a couple examples of pieces dyed with rose leaves co-mordanted with an iron pot. Some of the clothes in the first pic were bundle dyed with rose leaves, making a beautiful mottled pattern (sometimes clear leaf prints). #botanicaldye #fiberart #slowart #gray #naturaldye #textileartist

This is a photo of my botanical dyeing set up. It’s a little fire place made of fire brick with an old metal grate over the top. A large iron pot is balanced on top of the grate and a fire is burning underneath. The pot is full of clippings from rose bushes about to be cooked in water to extract dye.

For the past 4 years since relocating back to Vermont, I’ve been near enough to my parents’ home to do most of my dyeing there over an open fire. It is deeply romantic and I love it so much. Also, using an iron pot for co-mordant is the only way I work with iron. #botanicaldye #fiberartist
