screenshot of Federico Rossano's post reading:

Honored to have our 2009 paper on turn-taking timing linked in the launch of GPT-4o (https://lnkd.in/gN6_-_d4). Though that paper only looked at the timing of yes/no questions and the key message was that timing matters and preferred answers come faster than dispreferred ones

Indeed there was quite a bit of cultural/language variability and quite a bit of dyadic variability as can be seen in the plot showing the range by language (Fig. 2 from Stivers et al. 2009). What GPT-4o can do it truly impressive but humans are flexible and can adapt to their recipients (recipient design)

In other words, 200 or 250 ms is the mode, as can be seen in this figure from Levinson but not by a huge margin. Delays mean something and so does overlapping talk. Timing in conversation is not just a benchmark to hit but rather a signal to interpret

As Federico Rossano wrote recently, in response to his #EMCA research "on turn-taking timing linked in the launch of GPT-4o,”... β€œ[d]elays mean something and so does overlapping talk. Timing in conversation is not just a benchmark to hit but rather a signal to interpret.”

Human conversation is perfectly imperfect.

Our Conversation Design Institute webinar (me, Cathy Pearl, @saulalbert.bsky.social) addressing the question, "Should Conversational User Interfaces Make Human 'Errors'?" is now online.
