Summary:

Finally Hotch strides onto the plane, all they’d been waiting for before they could take off.

“What about you, Hotch?” asks Emily. “More training for your triathlon this weekend?”

“Unfortunately not,” says Hotch. His mouth is tight, and there’s a furrow to his brow. They all know the signs too well not to know something is wrong. “We have a case.”

“Already?” asks JJ, dismayed.

Hotch nods, shortly. “Fifteen year old boy has been reported missing in Los Angeles. Christopher Diaz.”

----

Or, a deeply self indulgent crossover coda to 9x5 Día de los Muertos, in which Abigail does in fact kidnap Chris, and the BAU step in to help find him.

There’s a tap-tap-tapping that catches Buck’s attention, and before he knows it, he’s watching Eddie racing towards the young boy from the photograph, who’s speeding over to him on crutches just as fast, and they come together in a tight and heartfelt hug.

“Don’t forget fluffier,” says Eddie with an easy smile, joining Chris on the couch, “He’s definitely a fluffball. Like you,” he punctuates this last with a tickle aimed at Chris, who shrieks in delight.

a record of the wreckage of my life by oceanofchaos

summary:

Evan gets bitten in Wyoming. He doesn’t know what it is at the time, he’s walking back to his truck, drunk, when he hears growling. He runs on instinct, and his Jeep is in sight when he goes down, something tearing into his leg.

The next day, he wakes up in the backseat of his Jeep, a hole in his jeans but his leg completely fine, and for a full month he thinks that it was a weird alcohol-induced dream.

    ----

Or Evan Buckley learns to live with being a werewolf, and perhaps worse than that, being alone with his own thoughts.

summary:

The thing about Eddie and Hen bonding is that he might not want to admit it, but Buck’s jealous. He’s achingly and overwhelmingly jealous. He’s jealous of Eddie.

He knows how it sounds, he knows what people think. He hasn’t even tried to raise it with Maddie, because she’d laugh at him and she wouldn’t believe him, and she’d ask if he was sure he wasn’t jealous of Hen. It really isn’t that.

Hen is special. Hen’s always been there for him, always been a steady and constant support like no one else.

The thing that no one seems to understand is that he lost Eddie months ago.

May’s looking at him seriously now, that thoughtful gaze so much like all three of her parents’ steady looks.

“What do you mean?” she asks, holding her wine glass in both hands, tucked up comfortably on his couch with her feet beneath her.

“If it really is doomed, then talking about it is the death knell. You’ll both have to admit it’s doomed, and where can you go from there? If you’re fundamentally incompatible, if there’s something broken that can’t be fixed, once you’ve acknowledged it, how do you go on pretending?”

“So it’s easier not to talk about it at all,” says May slowly, her eyes far too knowing.

“He’s not moving to Canada, and she’s not leaving it, and they both know that, deep down. But they’re in love. If they say it out loud, they’ll have to call it quits, but if they just keep avoiding the topic…” Buck offers, before taking a heavy gulp of his own wine.

Maddie, "They'll want to search me. They'll touch my totem. That's bad, right?"

"It's not great," agrees Buck, "Ideally no one ever knows what it is, what it looks like, feels like, weighs. You don't want anyone out there who could make it in a dream, that defeats the point. We can make you a new one, after tonight."

"Or," says Maddie after a moment, "You can look after it for me."

"What the fuck was that?" asks Chimney.
"How did you not get trampled?"

"O, ye of little faith," says Buck, grinning as he offers a hand to Chim and pulls him up to standing. He wipes the blood off on his jeans without thinking and then winces.

"I also thought you were going to get trampled," says Eddie, dismounting, blinking a little in the sunlight. "How on earth do you know how to do that?"

"Don't say it was just a dream," interjects Chimney, "I've definitely been trampled by a horse in more than one dream."

"What can I say," shrugs Buck, "It's just a little trick riding."

"Just a little trick riding, he says," complains Chimney in a 'can you believe this guy' kind of tone.

“Then let’s get going,” says Eddie, as behind them, Chimney starts to swing the door shut again. His arm is still heavy over Buck’s shoulders as they walk down the stairs, smoke and music rising to meet them.

“I think you're enjoying being taller for once a little too much,” says Buck, and Eddie just laughs, puts more weight down on Buck’s shoulders.

“You’re not that much taller than me usually,” says Eddie, rolling his eyes.

They reach the bottom of the stairs, and over the sounds of Karen belting some old blues song, they can just make out Chimney behind them, asking for the password.

“Go time,” says Eddie, “I’ll get two rye and perch at the bar, keep an eye out for our guy.”

“If anyone asks, I’m dancing,” says Buck with a sharp nod, dissolving into a musclebound bootlegger in a shirt with rolled up sleeves and suspenders.

Eddie pauses, looking at him with just the hint of a frown. “Have you made him taller?” he asks, like he even saw this forgery for longer than four minutes.

“No,” lies Buck, “Maybe you’re shrinking.” He darts ahead to avoid Eddie’s half-hearted swipe at him, grinning as he disappears into the haze of laughter and music.

“She’ll lose the grant, of course. And the award. But this kind of academic black mark? Her career is over, sure, but I doubt any of her legacy will survive. This is the kind of taint that destroys it all, even the good work. If people even remember her name in five years for anything except plagiarism, I’d be surprised.”

“Do you think?” asks Gainsey, and he sounds frail now, scared. Perfect.

Buck starts prepping the PASSIV, tucked in his little alcove in the podium of a statue.

“You see it all the time. These academics are always willing to push the boundaries to get their work published, to get the recognition they feel like they deserve, and it always ends the same way: that precious reputation in tatters. Their entire legacy lost.”

“She’s laying it on a bit thick, isn’t she?” mutters Eddie behind him, and Buck throws him a grin.

“Could be worse,” offers Buck, “Could be Chim.”

“Hey!” Chimney complains quietly as he joins them in his waiter’s outfit, a tray of flutes balanced in one hand. “You’re right, but hey.”

Buck opens his eyes, waking with the alarm he'd set.

Sitting at a chair pulled out from the dining table sits Eddie, watching him.

"Watching people sleep is creepy, haven't you heard?" asks Buck, slipping the needle out of his arm, unscrewing it. It's his personal PASSIV, but he still tries to be careful.

"How's it going?" Eddie asks, ignoring him entirely.

Buck narrows his eyes. "It's a start," he says, guarded.

"Okay," says Eddie, "Good."

It seems earnest enough to have Buck relaxing just a little.

"It won't take long," says Buck, "A few more days, I think, and I should be good to go."

"I know," says Eddie with a rueful smile.
"You're a faster learner, I saw that the other day."

“So what the fuck was that?" asks Eddie, furious, the second Buck wakes up.

"Whose subconscious goes straight for beating you to death?" Buck snaps back, equally angry, his limbs still shivering with phantom pain.

“Damn, not even a shiv?” asks Chimney, his mouth in a moue of distaste.

“I wish,” laughs Buck bitterly.

“Okay, okay,” says Bobby, soothingly, "What happened down there?”

“Your world-class forger shot me out of nowhere,” says Eddie, and Buck wants to stick to that, because ‘world-class’ is a hell of phrase, but he's got more pressing concerns right now. “What is your fucking problem, man?”

Eddie straightens at that, almost awkward. If Buck didn’t know better, he’d say that Eddie was embarrassed.

“Why is he on the team if he can’t even be a dreamer?” Buck asks Bobby, and it comes out slightly more desperate than he planned,

“Buck,” says Bobby, and it cuts to the quick, how tired he sounds. “You’re only going to two levels. Eddie doesn’t need to be a dreamer on this job.”

Buck rolls his eyes, throwing his hands up, like that is what he was complaining about.

“Sure, fine, whatever,” he says, storming away.

“Give him a minute,” he hears Hen say behind him. “He did just get beaten to death.”

There’s a turn off, and Buck’s bracing to leap over the barrier, duck through cars and keep running, when he realizes that the scent has shifted. They’ve turned off too.

He turns, running along the road, and howls to Eddie, to let him know that the hunt is moving, and maybe a little bit to let Doug know too. He's closing in. Doug should know that. He should know that he’s not in control here, he’s not the predator. He’s the prey.

There’s only one car ahead on the road, and it’s slowing. As much as Buck wants to leap ahead, slam into the side, tear through metal and glass to get at Doug’s fucking throat, he slows down instead. He can’t risk attacking the car, because he can't, won’t, risk Maddie.

He follows the turn off slower, waits until the car turns off again. Some kind of holiday cabin retreat. It looks closed. A perfect hunting ground.

crawling back to you by oceanofchaos

summary: “Eddie, I’m in love with you,” he says, heart thrumming in his chest, in his throat, in his mouth. He feels hot and cold and dizzy by turns.

“What?” asks Eddie faintly, barely even a question.

“I’m in love with you,” Buck says again. “I didn’t know, I didn’t mean to, but I am. I am.”

“You– Right, okay,” says Eddie, so visibly buffering that it makes Buck’s heart clench a little in his chest. Of course he’s in love with Eddie. How could he possibly have let himself pretend otherwise. “Wasn’t expecting this, bud,” says Eddie, and he sounds so shocked that Buck can’t help a wry smile. Of course Eddie’s surprised. They must be the only two people in existence who didn’t already know. “I– Buck, man, you know that I care about you, but…”

“I know,” he says gently to Eddie, because he did know, but that doesn't make this moment hurt any less.

Post season 8, Buck confesses his feelings, Eddie lets him down as gently as he can, and they both try to figure out how to be just friends.

crawling back to you by oceanofchaos summary: “Eddie, I’m in love with you,” he says, heart thrumming in his chest, in his throat, in his mouth. He feels hot and cold and dizzy by turns. “What?” asks Eddie faintly, barely even a question. “I’m in love with you,” Buck says again. “I didn’t know, I didn’t mean to, but I am. I am.” “You– Right, okay,” says Eddie, so visibly buffering that it makes Buck’s heart clench a little in his chest. “I– Buck, man, you know that I care about you, but…” “I know,” he says gently to Eddie, because he did know, but that doesn't make this moment hurt any less. --- Post season 8, Buck confesses his feelings, Eddie lets him down as gently as he can, and they both try to figure out how to be just friends.

It hurts. Eddie’s been hurting since Buck said he was in love, since he assured Eddie that he knew he was unloved in turn, that he wanted nothing from Eddie, despite his supposed love. Since Buck said all that and started running, like Eddie’s ever wanted him further away.

It’s just not fair. Nothing’s ever been fair, that’s not how life is, Eddie knows that, but this feels particularly unfair. Buck’s the only person who’s ever truly been Eddie’s, who’s had his back through thick and thin, who’s been there by his side in everything. Everything except this, except Buck standing separate to Eddie suddenly, Buck unreachable and hurting because of Eddie.

It’s unfair too, because for all that he made that big dramatic love confession, he hasn’t been acting like it. Eddie’s seeing it play against his eyelids every single night, and Buck’s just going about his life like it never even happened. Like he doesn’t even care anymore that Eddie doesn’t– can’t– isn’t–

Like he doesn’t even care.

"Where are you?" he asks, ignoring Buck's question entirely.

"Oh, man, are you at your place already?" asks Buck, like suddenly the word 'home' is too fucking good for him.

"Sure am, bud," says Eddie through gritted teeth. "Figured we could celebrate. Where are you?"

"Celebrate? So it went well? Amazing! Did you guys hear? Eddie's passed his recerts!"

"Buck?" asks Eddie, suddenly so fucking tired.

"Right, sorry. My meeting with the agent yesterday went well, had to move quick or lose this place.

"You moved out?" asks Eddie, who already kind of knew that, but selfishly wants to hear Buck have to say it.

"I know, I know, it's been sudden, I wasn't expecting it to come together so quickly."

Mission Day
Sol 6

"Come on," laughs Buck, "Are you seriously trying to tell me that this isn't cool?"

Ravi rolls his eyes through his spacesuit. "I am obviously not saying that it's not cool, stop putting words in my mouth."

"It's so cool," Buck responds cheerfully,
"We're on Mars. Literally what could be cooler?"

"Doing anything on Mars that isn't helping you collect dirt?" offers Ravi, and Buck shakes his head at him faux-sadly.

"Okay, well I don't think there's much here for you to hack right now, and I needed a spare pair of hands, so. Get collecting.
One day you will realize that I am right, and that collecting dirt is in fact very cool."

"Sure," teases Ravi, but he holds the samples carefully, is efficient as he works, does just as Buck taught him on the long flight out here. "Where's Eddie, anyway?
How did he get out of dirt duty?"

summary: They’re on that fucking hill for hours, and the rain doesn’t get heavier but it also doesn’t let up at all. It’s honestly pretty fucking miserable, just getting increasingly sodden, and there’s a fear that anyone trapped under debris could drown if they’re really fucking unlucky. They’re trying their best, but a disaster like this? Even under the best conditions, you can't save everyone. These are not the best conditions.

There’s still time. They still have time. Buck can just feel it slipping away, the odds ever worsening.

They do good work. They find a whole basketball team of teenagers who’d taken shelter in their friend’s indoor court, and then the whole house had been buried. They dig them out, and help them get to people who can hopefully contact their parents. One of them, the eight year old little brother of one of the players, can’t stop crying.

“I don’t get it,” one of the teenagers says to Buck as he cleans a superficial cut over his eyebrow, “He was so brave the whole time, he was practically chill! What’s there to cry about now?”

“He’s safe now,” says Buck, “So it’s easier to admit he was scared then.”

“Yeah, I guess," says the kid, and then, quietly, a confession he doesn’t quite know how to make, “It was really fucking scary, man.”

Buck gives him a tight smile through his own ongoing, constant fear, “I bet it was. You guys have all been so brave.”

The kid smiles at him, just a little, and he’s really just so young. He’s got to be not far off Chris’ age.

Buck wants to resent every second they don’t find Eddie, but he can’t. He can’t.

“I’m gonna go check on them,” says the teen, nodding towards his friend’s little brother, who’s still weeping into his big brother’s shoulder, and Buck claps him on the shoulder in support, approval, one of those little gestures that Bobby’s engrained into all of the rest of them.

At some point, Bobby drags him into the back of the ambulance to eat a sandwich.
It's good, he's sure, because Bobby made them all sandwiches, so they're not going to be anything other than good, but still.
Buck couldn't tell you what it tastes of.

They eat in silence. Companionable, but with the yawning fear and sadness echoing through every motion. It's got to be 29 hours by now. He texts Chris, wanting to keep him in the loop, hating to hurt him all over again with the lack of news.

There are so many people caught up in this, is the thing. It’s a residential neighbourhood, and the quake hit at three in the morning and fucking nobody seemed to have evacuated. The mudslide didn’t happen for hours, not until ten in the goddamn morning, but too many people were still trapped when it happened. Too many people live in this goddamn area of town, maybe, Too many people need help.

They help and they help and there’s no reprieve. There’s always someone else who needs help. There’s always someone else, and it’s never Eddie.

Buck hears them before he knows what they mean. Sirens. Reinforcements.

“It’s eight o’clock,” calls Bobby, across the dried and cracked mud and debris that used to be someone’s home.

Buck would stay, but Chris is at home, waiting for him.

the end is moving fast by oceansofchaos

summary:

Ravi (118) is calling.

There’s no logical reason for the way Chris feels in that moment, but for a second, just a second, Chris thinks, I am going to remember this day forever.

“Dad?” He calls out, “Ravi’s calling you.”

“Ravi?” asks his dad, confused, “Bring it to me, but you can pick up.”

Chris picks up the phone, feeling something twist in his stomach that he couldn’t have explained logically.

He doesn't actually manage to sleep on the plane, but he thinks they all knew that would be the case. He rehearses his case, over and over, tries to think of what to say, how best to explain it. How to offer Chris a ticket home without making it sound like it's a goodbye, without feeling like he's forcing him, without ever once mentioning the will.

He tries to eat something, but it tastes like sawdust in his mouth. He manages to drink water without immediately crying it out. Mostly he sits and doesn't let himself think. Keeps himself in tight and narrow and safe circles, rehearsing and rehearsing for a conversation he doesn't really know how to have.

They land, and the airport is empty and quiet. Ghostly. This is the problem with working 24 hour shifts all the time, you almost forget that the rest of the world turns off at certain times.

Buck's turning his phone on, trying to figure out how he'll get to the Diazes, when he sees it. A Lyft driver, holding his phone up like a sign as it reads "Bobby Nash"

They're getting up into the hills now, and that's when they hear it. Rain.

It's kind of funny, Buck thinks, watching his team pale, glance at him. He's past pretending that dying didn't fuck him up, is willing to be open and honest with his wounds, at least to these people. That said, this is something that genuinely doesn't bother him that much. Next to him, Eddie is a line of tension, across from them Chimney is so pale he looks like he's lost blood, and next to him Hen looks nauseous. Ravi's driving, cursing under his breath as he puts the wipers on, but next to him Bobby is focused on looking back at them, at Buck. Haunting them all, the drumming of rain on the engine roof, getting louder the more they drive into the hills.

Obviously it was raining that day, but the thing is, Buck actually missed most of the rain. Hell, he missed most of all of it. That was kind of the problem. The trauma for Buck was inside his own mind, in relearning his own body. His whole team hate the rain now, but Buck honestly doesn't mind it, except that he can see how it hurts the people he loves.
