sole surviving rook staring down the barrel of a queen threatening to break in like the roar of a winter storm the seething gray intent on killing the calm painting the walls with static as it goes and unpromising the hard-fought serenity of warmth leaving me bereft of the elysisms that were fostered in fallow soil like gnarled roots addled and weary unable to let go of that awful open door
