The usual response to overtourism is logistical: distribute visitors, regulate access, internalize costs. These are reasonable.
But care ethics asks a different question : not what is the efficient solution, but what does responsiveness look like here?

"Care of place" is a concept within care ethics that extends moral consideration beyond humans — to the places themselves, and the animals, ecosystems, and communities within them.

So many people are pushed deeper into isolation not because they lack strength,
but because they lack words the world is willing to hear.

This #GoodCareMonth, let’s rethink public policies & bureaucracies: from rules & detachment to care, empathy, and responsibility. A call to transform institutions for those who need it most.

Pull quotye on a grey square background, "The process demonstrated itself as more than a single event: Intake became orientation. Pre-mediation became narrative anchoring. Dialogue became midpoint. Outcomes became waypoints. Follow-up became continued care."
When we tested our Veterans' Mediation model we discovered that "Mediation is more than an event."

Pull quote on a square orange background: "We do not mediate because the law has failed. We mediate because the law has finished - and something still remains to be done." Andrew C. Wood Holding Space where the Quality of Mercy Is Most Definitely Strained."
This latest Field Note is not a critique. It is a mapping. We are not yet asking what ought to be done differently. We are first asking: What exactly is the space we are being asked to enter as mediators?

Towards a Theory & Practice of Relational Justice in Veterans’ Mediation
“A mediation program that is not well calibrated to a coherent theory and practice of justice may be little more than a platform for care-less deal-making.”

The Architecture of Care: Decentralising Self
Designing a Veterans' mediation program around shared care—not delivered care—means decentralising authority, honouring pain & co-holding risk. It’s one thing to “respond”; it’s another to care together.

Looking back on 2024, here's 1 of my highlights: A book on teacher quality and teacher ethics, edt. at #DPU. I contributed a chapter on #teacherqualities that make teachers stay in the profession, arguing #teachershortage in #Nordic countries can be mitigated by #careethics. doi.org/10.4324/9781...
In this post I discuss how a framework for professionalism for a voluntary professional body can sit alongside statutory schemes for regulation. What types of overlay are feasible? Is a #CareEthics overlay workable; and what would it look like?
