Terrestrial #Carpathite comes from decomposed plant matter. It isn’t hard to imagine a chlorophyll molecule exchanging Mg for V, under the right conditions, followed by hydrothermal deposition in crystalline form.
Sort of an aside. Space apparently smells like burnt steak due to PAHs. So is #Carpathite …
Burnt Meat Rock!

(I know … too late. But could have been awesome.)
I’m backing the underdog, #Carpathite in today’s #MinCup vote: I wasn’t aware that crystalline polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons existed in nature! PAHs in Antarctic Martian meteorite Allan Hills 84001 were briefly considered as evidence that it once contained microbial life.
Closing in, #Tugtupite has a big lead over #Carpathite & no surprise as the “Reindeer Blood” mineral is just incredible. Fluorescent, phosphorescent AND pleochroic, also generating an electric charge under pressure? It’s going to give #Perovskite all it can handle & maybe more next round! #MinCup25
The lights are turned off and a UV light illuminates neon green and oranges in a collection of florescent minerals
With the lights on, this display looks like a basic collection of grey and brown rocks.
For #carpathite vs #tugtupite I don't have photos exactly but I want to share the florescents display!

It's truly a battle of the UV dynamos.
For this match we have two fluorescent beauties facing off in what promises to be a good match.
We have #carpathite the very rare hydrocarbon versus #tugtupite the silicate relative of sodalite

But were left with questions.
Where did terrestrial #carpathite coronene come from?
Delivered by meteors and comets? Synthesized by life? The cooked distilled remains of earliest life? Forest fires? Other?
What are the latest theories? 🤷🏻♀️
Tough choice:
#carpathite bc I'm an organic chemist
#tugtupite bc of tenebrescence (when a mineral changes color after exposure to UV light)
Tugtupite from Greenland,
left: after exposure to SW-UV;
right: the pink color faded after ca. 1 day in its box.
(this sample has been stolen 2023 😭)

As a lifelong horror fan, and a particular fan of Christmas horror, I had to vote for #Tugtupite (Reindeer! Blood!) but I am also a big fan of #Carpathite because 1) pretty! and 2) Carpathians? Horror adjacent! #MinCup25
Carpathite is one of the few organic minerals...why are y'all not voting for it??!!
Join team #carpathite with me!
#Carpathite is composed of hydrothermally deposited coronene. Coronene is also proxy for wildfire activity, a function of terrestrial biomass, atmospheric O2, and ignition sources like lightning, volcanoes, and bolides. The oldest known occurrence on Earth dates to the early Ediacarian.

En el juego 4 de la 2da ronda de #MinCup25 se enfrentan Carpatita #Carpathite vs. Tugtupita #Tugtupite. ¿Cuál ganará?

Yo elegí Tugtupite
Tough choice: The one looks like a marten gnawed on the Large Hadron Collider or the one that looks a vampire dragged a body through a Fort Lauderdale fine art gallery
Gotta go with mustelid attack and vote #Carpathite #MinCup25
Can someone explain to me why natural #carpathite and synthetic fluoresce with different colors? Is it related to purity versus a solid solution? #MinCup25
#MinCup Round 2 Match 4:
It’s a battle of mineralogical oddities as organic mineral #Carpathite battles against vs #Tugtupite, a mineral that looks like reindeer blood!

You did not fail. Great information. #carpathite will need all support it can muster to defeat perovskite, this year’s mineral closest to harnessing meat rock energy. 🧐
Image by Rob Lavinsky shows yellow planes of Carpathite radiating out from the bottom center of a cut rock. The background rock is white with a brownish shell, and the carpathite radiates our like sun beams drawn by a child.
Let's dig in on #Carpathite. With it's planer structure, it looks like the frosting in a poorly constructed layer cake when viewed in sliced rocks. Hit it with UV light, & it will fluoresce back with blue light. Made of C24H12, Carpathite is pure coronene, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH).
Today's #mincup competitors are going to take more than just a post or 2 to discuss. We have soft & white #leucite versus green in visual & blue under UV #carpathite, which is the crystalized form of Coronene.
From appearance alone, the striking #carpathite is the winner
But let's look deeper. A 🧵
Those are the best clear crystals I’ve seen of #Leucite ! Sadly I just saw the loss to #Carpathite
Reading up on both #Carpathite and #Leucite I really like them both. I tend to favor minerals that have volcanoes 🌋 in their origin stories, so that has me tipping towards leucite. However, I remain unconvinced, and with six hours to go, I’m open to all arguments. #MinCup25 (Pix from mindat.org)
I love Mineral Cup for educating me about minerals I'd never heard of before.
But I'll still vote for shallow reasons. #Carpathite is more colorful than #Leucite, so even though leucite is also "white garnet", I'm voting for carpathite.
#MinCup25
Fluorescence for the win! #carpathite
(#TeamPaddlewheelite)
Tough call today in #mincup25 , but I'm going #carpathite , the organic crystal pretending to be a mineral. It's like a spy for the organic world infiltrating inorganic spaces!
It is tough. However, #VOTE #CARPATHITE I think. #MinCup25 #MinCup 🤔🥾⚒️
#Carpathite
1. How does it form? What’s the distinction that makes it ok to be a mineral despite being organic? It is always metamorphism of previously-biological goop?
2. Why its structure is spoken of in delight (or described as corrugated layers)?

Leucite has a range of volcanic hills named after it, see:

These are strange, high potassium lamproites from the mantle, only 1-2 million years old.
Match that, organic goo #carpathite !

That clinches it for me! I'll vote for the flammable rock. #Carpathite
