For a pre/sidequel, the poignance of Jocelyn’s “youthful innocence,” knowing the price of maturity and how complex his understanding of true devotion will become, is a level all its own. Looking forward to rereading but glad I went in this order.

Carey is fantastic at fleshing out the celibate scholar-philosopher-warrior perspective and human relationships growing up in training while maintaining the contemplative/intellectual and even sensual tone from the courtesan perspective books.
