Title: Religious affiliation in Australia, 1971–2021. Chart Type: A line chart showing the proportion of the Australian population identifying with different religious groups over a 50-year period.

Key Trends:

Christianity (Steep Decline): Represented by a line that starts at the top left of the chart. In 1971, 86.2% of Australians identified as Christian. The line shows a steady, consistent downward slope, dropping to 43.9% by 2021. This represents a nearly 50% decrease in its share of the population.

No Religion (Sharp Increase): Represented by a line starting near the bottom left. In 1971, only 6.7% of people reported having no religion. The line slopes upward gradually until the early 2000s, where the incline becomes much steeper. By 2021, it reaches 38.9%, quickly closing the gap with Christianity.

Other Religions (Gradual Growth): A third line tracking non-Christian religions (such as Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism). This line starts near the bottom at 0.8% in 1971 and shows a slow but steady upward trend, reaching 10.0% in 2021.

Visual Summary: The chart shows a "scissors" effect where the declining line of Christianity and the rising line of "No Religion" are on a clear trajectory to intersect in the near future.

Reality bites hard for religious lobbyists when they look at "no religion" trends.

They'd be desperate to keep official census religious numbers artificially high so as to justify sucking-up more than their fair share of tax-payer resources. 😑

ABS to planning to remove the Basic Microdata from the 2026 Australian Census data release and replace it with synthetic data. A major backwards step. Synthetic data will be unable to capture the complexity of interactions the microdata will show. #Census2026 www.abs.gov.au/statistics/r...

ABS buckles in face of religious lobbyists to keep biased Census question — Census21

“In 2026, the #ABS will again use an assumption-based, leading question which presumes each respondent has a religion. This results in acquiescence bias, distorting the accuracy of the final counts.” #AustralianBureauOfStatistics #Census2026 #census #religion #AusPol #NoReligion

Essential Research 2021 Census Religiosity Polls Data - National Secular Lobby Data from two polls commissioned by the NSL and conducted by Essential Research during July 2021 on the religiosity of Australians.

This is a disappointing retreat by the ABS in its mission to ensure accuracy in data. The current question skews responses (as our own research discovered). #auspol #census2026 #Census21
