The @chronicinclude survey is now available online. Please consider taking part - responses will be used "to produce a manifesto for change for people with chronic illness." Amen to that. #chronicpain #chroniclife #spoonies #certainpain https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/CIIPmanifesto
Still sad/angry about the demise of @Storify, but the export/import over to @wakelet is now *all done*. Their import function is super easy, just needs the JSON urls of yr Storifies to work. #certainpain embeds remain safe on my blog

I think also there's a large dash of the preconceived assumption of medieval = brutish, uncultured, subhuman #certainpain
Thereby suppressing from the historical record the grim truth that, yep, many ppl lived w pretty damn bad pain forever #certainpain
W medieval instances of the "unliveable" horror of untreatable pain, we can just decide that, nope, they just didn't feel it #certainpain
Which is the rhetoric that *many* ppl w disabilities face from society, incl folks with #chronicpain #certainpain
My point being: "how could those poor medieval wretches cope in constant pain w/o modern medicine?" = such a life is unliveable #certainpain
& I think the instinctive repulsion from accepting medieval ppl felt pain "like us" is telling - of the cloying stigma of pain #certainpain
We can recgnise that e.g. immersion in Catholicism radically shapes medieval person's pain experience AND draw lines of contact #certainpain
& being able to recognise that you are not alone, isolated in history - but others have come before you & lived is important #certainpain
Representation *matters*. Be that contemporary media representation, political representation, or historical representation. #certainpain
Or so the line of argument goes/has gone. Obvs I disagree, pretty hard. #certainpain
So no meaningful cnnectn can be drawn between the deeply situated pain experiences of medieval #chronicpain person & modern one #certainpain
Other source of pushback on project has come from a ~ > positive place, re: socio-cultural conditions shaping pain experience #certainpain
But. C'mon now. There's tons of evidence of folks living w pain(s) that did not go away, did not respond to treatment, etc etc #certainpain
Obvs I agree that term "chronic pain" is context dependent & in use at particular time, previous eras not using same term, etc #certainpain
Feedback on funding apps I've put in incl the gem "people did not have #chronicpain before the 1900s" #certainpain
It's telling that consensus up till 70s was that medieval people didn't really feel pain "like us" (see Esther Cohen on this) #certainpain
When pitching this project & thru the year, I've had to justify the resonance, the importance of this kind of work #certainpain
Topic of this #certainpain #chat comes from me thinking about my past ~year of work on medieval #chronicpain & taking a reflective moment
I'm an academic in the UK at @UCL_IAS, working on #chronicpain in medieval literature & live with #chronicpain myself #certainpain
Plz feel free to participate if you'd like - just introduce yourself briefly, & dive in when you're ready :) #certainpain
