Bellmer's obsession with dolls-his endless fabrication, reconstitution, and photographic presentation of them-was an effort to construct objects that would articulate his tortured desires in material form. The bizarre, robotic temptress in this negative print has an eerie electric aura. To love her, one would have to have, as the Surrealist poet Pierre Reverdy wrote, a "short circuit in the heart-system."
Hans Bellmer was a German artist, best known for his drawings, etchings that illustrates the 1940 edition of Histoire de l’œil, and the life-sized female dolls he produced in the mid-1930s. Historians of art and photography also consider him a Surrealist photographer.

An exquisite vintage 1930s 40s handmade engraved sterling silver ornate floral foliate design money clip by Renato Ristori di Egisto of Firenze (Florence), Italy. Ristori di Egisto opened his workshop in Florence in 1935 on the Via Ponte Vecchio, and was in business there until about the mid-1950s. His work as you can see is entirely handmade and extremely work-intensive being hand-cut from silver sheet, then given dimension by repoussage (hammered from behind), and then chased and engraved by hand extensively at front to create this masterwork of Italian silver artistry! Such a beautiful object could be the property of either a discerning gentleman or a lady of taste. Measures 2-5/8" long by just under 1.5" wide, and weighs 21.5 grams total. Marked at back as shown, "925" in an oval reserve, then the Italian registry mark for this maker, then "STERLING" in all cap block letters, then "Made in Italy" also all in cap block letters. The best Italian work from this period is of the highest workmanship and quality, and comparable with the finest from anywhere else in the world! Other than some tarnish to the silver, this money clip has survived wonderfully. The hinge mechanism opens and closes easily, and stays closed firmly. Excellent vintage condition.
