The story has a very Arthur C. Clarke or Issac Asimov feel to it. It reminded a lot of "Childhood's End" but only in the first chapters. (It's a lot more lighthearted than that story.) There's also a "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" flavor to the prose, as well as a few dashes of Star Trek TNG in there. Jim is very Q like, though nicer. 😇
