Commander Brackets – A Few Months Later We’ve made it to the end of April and now seen the updates related to the Commander Brackets Beta, Game Changers, and Commander Ban list. I’ll be referencing the official WotC articles throughout and provide links to them below for you to read for more information. First, we got a new graphic! The initial high level descriptor phrase has been replaced with a short description of the intent, as well as clarifying the objective criteria for each bracket (No Game Changers, Limited Tutors, etc.).

A few thoughts on the #commanderbrackets updates from a few days ago.

The more I play in the new brackets system, the more I think mana base optimization should be listed as one of the benchmarks differentiating the brackets. A more optimized mana base - ABUR duals/shocks/fetches provides speed/consistency beyond what one associates with precons.

I had a great time at MCChicago, played a lot of great games using the beta bracket system. Overall I think this system is in a good starting place, but I have some thoughts, including suggestions for consideration.

I'm only throwing out my #mtg #commanderbrackets thoughts because Gavin Verhey requested it on the EDHrec Podcast.

I was cautiously optimistic before, but the insights in the podcast really helped clear up my worries! I actually got excited at looking at the "menu" for a deck I'm brewing.

As I was discussing the new Commander Bracket System, I came to the conclusion that it isnt a Powerlevel scale, but its more like a Consent Form akin to what is used in many DnD games during Session 0.

Upon reflection I don't think Exhibition (B1) make sense or work as a power level consideration. If someone sits down to make an Exhibition deck, they are more than likely as informed or enfranchised as someone making a cEDH/HPC deck. No one is accidentally making sillyhats.dec

You play cEdh and call them "Game Changers".
I play a Griffin Typal and call them "To Have a Chance".
We are not the same.

So according to the bracket system nearly every deck I’ve ever built stands around a 1 or 2 (sounds right honestly), except for one: Soundwave, which is a 3.

Fun fact: I have only won with Soundwave once in the dozens of times I’ve played it lol. #MTG #CommanderBrackets
