Black protests about policing in 1990s and 2000s: Time trends – Race, Politics, Justice

Here is the link to my blog post about Black protests about police 1994-2010. Mainstream newswires gave more attention to fatal incidents. Black newspapers gave more attention to other policing issues including brutality in general. #contentiousky 2/3

Bar graph. Horizontal axis years. Vertical axis number of events. Colors show type of news coverage: NW only, NW & BN, BN outstate, BN instate. General pattern is a peak 1999-2001, low point 2004, rise after. Tables in the blog post linked in the next skeet in the thread provide numerical representation of this and other graphs in the blog post.

Partly because I had to pull the plots out of an article I'm revising, I created a blog post showing graphs of counts of Black protests about policing 1999-2010 by news coverage type (mainstream newswire vs. Black newspapers local and not). Link to blog post in next skeet. #contentiousky 1/3

How relying on competing and incomplete narratives in news sources & failure to treat media coverage itself as an event distorts understanding of collective action processes in the Jena Six protests of 2007. Preprint of forthcoming book chapter. #commsky #contentiousky 1/3

#contentiousky David S. Meyer's posts about social movements are always instructive. This one is about the call for nuclear testing. David is a long time veteran of the peace movement including the nuclear freeze movement.

I am remembering how the Tea Party protests in the Obama administration (2009-2010) were covered and thinking about how that coverage compares to the No Kings protests. #contentiousky

Flights in Afghanistan grounded after internet shutdown The Taliban have yet to give an official reason for the shutdown, but said it would last indefinitely.

Yesterday, the Taliban cut off the internet in Afghanistan. For now, mobile internet & Starlink are functioning, but the impact on flight operations, banking, education & health services is already severe and causing dismay among many Afghans.

@asa-cbsm.bsky.social #contentiousky #CBSM2025 🧵 Some take-aways about protest and social movements. (1) Protest movements have opponents, who will fight back if they lose, things are never settled. (2) You protest when you are in a losing position, of course protest does not always win 1/

How did the new Taliban government deal with protests in areas previously controlled by the internationally recognised government? Did they make concessions in these areas to win over constituents? Or did they remain wary of possibly continuing loyalties to the old government?

Did protesters in previous rebel strongholds benefit from their ties to the Taliban after 2021? Or did the Taliban government adopt a repressive response to protests after 2021 because it no longer relied on support from the population?

The Taliban's policies towards civil society have become more salient after taking control of the state. But how did they govern in provinces under their control even before 2021? What changed in 2021? And what does this have to do with protest movements in Afghanistan?

It's not just that we have no evidence that, without a world-historic mass mobilization, philanthropists can save us from climate catastrophe and democratic backsliding.

It's also that we have no evidence they even want to.

This potential legal attack on the nonprofit sector in the US fits with the global administrative assault on NGOs and civil society known as closing civic space, where leaders use anti-NGO laws to create barriers to entry, funding, advocacy for organizations. #nonprofitsky #polisky #contentiousky

Our research project investigates how the Taliban's takeover of the Afghan government has changed the opportunity structures (protest tactics and frequencies) for protests. Afghanistan is an interesting case study because it constitutes one of the few successful rebel movements.
