He didn't just flatter him, he confronted him. Banneker quoted Jefferson's own words on liberty and asked how he could write about freedom while owning enslaved people. You should be found guilty, Banneker wrote of that most criminal act which you profess deadly detest. Imagine the courage a free black man in the Seventeen hundreds. Putting Jefferson on trial. With his own words, Jefferson replied, but never answered the core question, because the truth. Banneker exposed the hypocrisy of a founding father before most Americans could even read.
