A cop of single ply yarn wrapped onto a spindle. The yarn is in many shades of green, which can be seen because of the crisscrossed method of winding onto the dealgan.

A few turns of single ply yarn are wound round the top of a dealgan spindle to see the variations in colour, behind that the distaff can be seen dressed with many shades of green, white and blue. The singles show changes in colour and some two colour twined

I do like the way this mix is spinning up!

Dealgan with a cope of variegated green single ply yarn crossed with a distaff that holds fibres in the same colour. The dealgan is a wooden spindle that looks a little like a small baseball bat with the yarn wound round the thicker part, under a cross cut on the thick end and up to a half hitch under the little knob on the thin end. The distaff is a thin metal stick with a ring on one end and a handle made with four red wooden beads and a larger green one next to the fibres which are bound on with a crisscross thin gold ribbon.

I do like a dealgan, and also my kebab stick distaff!

As so often the camera doesn’t do the colours justice…

A dealgan spindle with a little single ply yarn on it, on top of some recycled sari waste fibres in purples pinks and blues.

The finished ball of two ply yarn, sitting on a crochet blanket and because it’s resting in a black stripe it looks weirdly like it’s floating. The yarn is purple.

A small ball of yarn fresh off the spindle. Now I must try and get some sleep!

Sadly I completely failed to wind it in such a way as to show the colour changes… but I’ll show you again when it reaches its final form…

Have some ideas for centre whorl distaffs using a chopstick and a flat bead with a big hole in the centre… but I really should try and get some kip!
