Follow-up: NOAA released their animation of the July 29 tsunami generated by an 8.8 earthquake off the Kamchatka Peninsula.

Great news for those of us in tornado-prone areas 🙃 #DefendNOAA #DefendNWS
Authoritarianism thrives on dismantling public safety nets. Gutting NOAA weakens the public’s ability to prepare, know, or respond—shifting power from science to strongman. When leaders silence warnings, disasters grow deadlier—and accountability disappears.

Screenshot of LinkedIn post authored by John Amos - CEO at SkyTruth: Sharing the view from space to promote conservation It's disappointing and alarming to hear about the mass firings happening at NOAA, one of the nation's premiere science agencies. This haphazard, reckless action will shave only a minuscule fraction of one percent off the federal budget deficit, while putting at risk core missions of NOAA that benefit millions of Americans every day. This includes weather and search-and-rescue satellites, as well as weather forecasting and analysis, that literally saves lives and property and supports agriculture and other businesses that need accurate forecasting. It includes the vital daily work of monitoring America's ocean territory (a far-flung area equal in size to the total land area of the US) to detect oil pollution, critical information used by the US Coast Guard to chase down polluters and keep American waters clean.
Our rapidly changing world makes one thing perfectly clear: our nation needs more scientists working for the public good, not fewer. By weakening NOAA, this administration is making us all less safe, and is giving up American scientific leadership, prestige, and influence on the international stage.

My first job out of grad school was with @noaa.gov The people I worked for were extraordinary. Smart, hard working and dedicated to protecting our coastal environments. Places that happen to generate 100s of billions dollars and millions of jobs, amongst much more. #defendnoaa
Tar balls and red tide in Florida and fires and atmospheric rivers in California. Great time to gut America’s leading ocean and weather agency. 🙄
The US ocean economy is ~$500 billion and supports > 1.2 million jobs. NOAA’s budget $6-7 billion #defendNOAA
Gutting NOAA isn’t ‘efficiency’—it’s an attack on public safety. The National Weather Service and Hurricane Center save lives. Slashing their resources isn’t reform, it’s reckless. We must stay focused and continue to fight! #Protests #DefendNOAA
🚨Disturbing news: Staff from Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) entered NOAA HQ, bypassing security & seeking IT access. This aligns with Project 2025’s plan to gut climate science. The National Weather Service is vital—this is dangerous. #ClimateCrisis #DefendNOAA
