The Bridge ‘Die Brücke’ (1959) rewind review – an astonishing, emotional and powerful antiwar film that deserves far more attention Bernhard Wicki builds a sense of inescapable tension as the seven boys' eyes slowly open to the reality of their situation, and the spring sunshine turns to thick fog and darkness on the bridge of no escape. ★★★★★ Based on a 1958 novel by journalist and writer Gregor Dorfmeister, written under the pseudonym Manfred Gregor, The Bridge (Die Brücke) is a story of corrupted innocence, lies, and the vulnerability of youth as Germany fell to Allied forces in the spring of 1945.

For more on Rosa Schapire, see https://jwa.org/encyclopedia/article/schapire-rosa

1920 was an eventful year for Gramatté: Ferdinand Möller set up a show in his Berlin gallery, which was followed by exhibitions in Hamburg. There the painter also met Rosa Schapire (1874–1954), who received her doctorate in Heidelberg in 1904 as one of the first women in art history. She had lived in Hamburg since 1905, and became an important patron of the Die Brücke (Bridge) artist group. Schapire published an essay on Gramatté's work in the "Cicerone" and remained his support and close personal confidant until his early death.

The “Portrait Rosa Schapire” was created at the end of August 1920 in Malente-Gremsmühlen, a spa in Holstein Switzerland where Gramatté and his wife Sonia were spending their vacation. Elegantly dressed in white, decorated with a chain and rose on the neckline, Schapire sits in a classic melancholic pose in the feast chair, the fingers of the left hand placed on the mouth and cheek. The questioningly critical look of her big dark eyes reveals the respect of the painter in front of the art expert. White-haired, bony, and serious, she looks older and narrower than she was back then. The blue background is crossed by the spherical red-yellow lights of a sunset over a large body of water (presumably the Dieksee). The waves on the water surface mirror the wave-shaped border of Schapire's dress.

El Expresionismo Alemán no quería mostrar el mundo, sino sentirlo: colores que gritan, formas que se retuercen y una crítica feroz a la sociedad moderna.

A highlu impressionistic, almost abstract painting of waves breaking gently on a sandy beach under a sky filed with white clouds. A white lighthouse, almost invisible against the sky, stands on a rocky outcropping at the right.

"Cake-Walk" is a vivid and dynamic composition,
characterized by bold colors and expressive forms. The scene depicts two figures engaged in an active and
lively dance. The loopuse of contrasting colors--particularly the blues and blacks against a background of greens and earthy tones--highlight
the fluidity and energy of the dancers. The figures are rendered with a sense
of movement and rhythm, reflecting the dynamism intrinsic to the dance they are performing. Kirchner's
technique emphasizes the emotional intensity and physical exuberance of
the moment, encapsulating the essence of Expressionism through distorted shapes and a vivid color palette.

In 1905, Kirchner, along with Fritz Bleyl and two other architecture students, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Erich Heckel, founded the artists group Die Brücke ("The Bridge"). From then on, he committed himself to art. The group aimed to eschew the prevalent traditional academic style and find a new mode of artistic expression, which would form a bridge (hence the name) between the past and the present. They responded to past artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Matthias Grünewald and Lucas Cranach the Elder, as well as contemporary international avant-garde movements. As part of the affirmation of their national heritage, they revived older media, particularly woodcut prints.

Kirchner was a driving force in the Die Brücke group that flourished in Dresden and Berlin before World War I, and he has come to be seen as one of the most talented and influential of Germany's Expressionists. Motivated by the same anxieties that gripped the movement as a whole - fears about humanity's place in the modern world, its lost feelings of spirituality and authenticity - Kirchner had conflicting attitudes to the past and present. An admirer of Albrecht Dürer, he revived the old art of woodblock printing, and saw himself in the German tradition, yet he rejected academic styles and was inspired by the modern city. After the war, illness drove him to settle in Davos, Switzerland, where he painted many landscapes, and, ultimately, he found himself ostracized from mainstream German art. When the Nazis rose to power in the early 1930s he was also a victim of their campaign against "Degenerate Art." Depressed and ill, he eventually committed suicide.

As a kid, I was very impressed by #DieBrücke, followed by the masterpieces about friendship, #AbsoluteGiganten, and love, #ImJuli.

In recent years, #Parasite and #CivilWar left the most lasting impression.

#BladeRunner is also somehow buzzing around.
