29 January, online and in-person at @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social, open to all, I'll be talking about my recent adventures in memoir and #drinkhistory:

Photo of a black cat laid on the floor on top of a large sheet of paper, which contains writing in black marker pen. The writing is bullet pointed suggestions and comments such as "less prep time in Term 2".

Fruity, Fizzy, and Controversial!
#WKD didn’t just enter — it exploded into Britain’s drinking culture. In #PastandCurious, I uncap the cobalt-blue chaos of alcopops and what it says about post-war Britain.

Photo of a book lying on top of a yellow corduroy cushion. The book is titled Time and Alcohol: It's Five O'Clock Somewhere! and is edited by Peter J. Howland. The cover is plain with the title etc. on a white band in the middle and the rest of the cover is a green colour.
Photo of a book page displaying the chapter title: Nipping and Tippling: How 'Petty but Perpetual Drinking' Caused Moral Panic in Late Victorian Britain.
My author copy of Time and Alcohol: It's Five O'Clock Somewhere!, containing a chapter written with Graham Harding on #c19 tippling, just arrived 😊 [Usual caveats about the extortionate price of academic books, but please use via your library if possible, etc.] #drinkhistory
Photo of a silver circular medal on a desktop. There are laurel leaves embossed around the edge of the medal and in the middle text reads 'National Temperance League Military Branch 1860'. The medal is attached to a short length of brown and blue striped ribbon, with another small 'medal' pinned to it noting that the wearer has been temperate for Two Years.
Do any #drinkhistory colleagues know anything about "military branches" of the National Temperance League? Medal found in @jasonbbernard.bsky.social's antiques collection.
#OnThisDate, 1 April 1918, Canada's #Prohibition began. Many provinces had already limited alcohol, but after the election of 1917, it became a national ban. This included importing alcohol of more than 2.5 percent, inter-provincial trade, and a ban on production.

#OnThisDate, 30 Mar 1972, the #Canadian Navy ended its rum ration to the sailors. Known as "Black Tot Day," #rum was given to British sailors as a treat and, later mixed with lime, sugar, and water, to prevent scurvy.
A tot of rum at the end was 2.5 oz. (75 mL).

#OnThisDate, 20 Feb 1703, the Mount Gay Estate began to distill #rum in Barbados. This is the earliest evidence of when rum began to be created commercially.
In the American colonies, rum was the spirit of choice due to its low cost and ease of acquiring it.
