Spring made a surprise attack last Friday.
On Thursday it was -2C and on Friday I could go cycling in the sun at 15C.
From the polder near #Barendrecht a NOSW four-part.

Lovely sunshine and little wind, perfect weather for a hike.

But clear skies in winter usually mean cold, so the hat had to stay on.

On the south side the river that carries the water to the North Sea.
On the north side the fields, meadows and greenhouses.
In the west, the space and the road to the sea and in the east, the metro to the big city.

The first hike of the year. Just caught the last rain of the afternoon.
The wind ensures that I can enjoy the sun and the beautiful #Dutchskies for a while.

Sunset on the beach boulevard in Hoek van Holland.
The Strandboulevard is called that because the beach used to be on the Strandboulevard.
In the 1970s the beach was reclaimed and extended a kilometer further.

The Broekpolder pumping station in Kwintsheul.
This photo is the western Netherlands in a nutshell.
On the left a canal in the middle a pumping station and on the right a canal, to which the water can be pumped to drain the polder dry.

De Kapel, a hamlet between Vlaardingen and Schipluiden.
The pollard willows on the side of the road along the ditch are clearly visible.
Pollard willows ensure that the soil along the sides stays in place and does not flake off too much.

The great thing about #cycling compared to #hiking is that you have a greater range.
Details of your route pass your eye more quickly, which is why I think hiking is a better outdoor activity for taking #photos.
But cycling is my no1 outdoor activity, active and passive.

The outer harbor of Maassluis, the city where I live and was born.
The port was a fishing port before 1920, but later changed into a port for coastal shipping and towing and salvage.
Nowadays the harbor is mainly a historical attraction.

The river Maas has its origins in France and runs via Belgium through the lowlands of the Netherlands to the North Sea.
The port of Rotterdam is an area of many square kilometers with a lot of activity.
In this photo you see a freight ship going offshore and the ferry to the other side of the Scheur (that is the name of the part of the Nieuwe Waterweg that runs along Maassluis), called Rozenburg.

The lowest point in the area.
From here the water is pumped up to the Nieuwe Waterweg via ditches, steams and canals.
If this did not happen, half of the Netherlands would be under water.
Ingenious constructions have been keeping our Dutch feet dry for centuries.
In the past with the help of a windmill that drove the pumps, later it became steam, diesel and nowadays electricity that is partly generated with windmills :)

The oldest windmill in the area, which kept our feet dry.
Nowadays there is an electric pump next to it that does the work.
If the power ever goes out, luckily we still have it.
