Pelham, eighteen, fifty nine, nineteen forty three, was a trailblazer in multiple fields, an inventor, newspaper publisher, and editor. Born in Petersburg, Virginia, his family moved to Detroit, OJT, seeking better opportunities for their children. In Eighteen ninety three, Pelham married Gabriel Lewis, and the couple relocated to Washington, DC, where he took a job as a clerk at the U. S. Census Bureau. At a time when few institutions welcomed black professionals, the Census Bureau was one of the first to hire African Americans as data processors. Pelham wasn't just an employee, he was a problem solver. Clerks had to manually paste thousands of statistical slips onto sheets, a tedious and time consuming process. So Pelham invented a machine to automate the task, saving the bureau. Oh, countless hours and resources. He patented this groundbreaking device and nineteen, oh, five, and later secured another patent in Nineteen Thirteen for a tallying machine. After thirty years in government service, he returned to his passion journalism, becoming an editor at the Washington Tribune, Boone, and founding the Capital News Service, a news agency focused on black issues. A true innovator, Pilgrims impact extended from technology to media, ensuring black voices were heard in history. Share, believe, inspire blacks, be.
