Fantastic post by @duffy_ma on the latest women in science kerfuffle on ecolog dynamicecology.wordpress.com/2013/02/22/women-in-ecol... #ecologate
Nicely said, and good discussion. RT @duffy_ma: Inspired by #ecologate RT @ProfLikeSubst On work/life "balance" scientopia.org/blogs/proflikesubstance/...
I'm a scientist; I have to have work-activism balance. Things like #womanspace or #ecologate, etc. take time and energy away from science.
I think my #ecologate write-up will come with a playlist. Feel free to send me suggestions of your favorite feminist songs.
I was going to write a post about bison wallows this week, but now I have to write about #ecologate. #sexismhurtsscience
RT @duffy_ma: This is what my toddler thinks of #ecologate http://t.co/KDcK1Od2
Someone contacted me off-ECOLOG to tell me people who aren't actively parenting their kids aren't parents. How is that relevant? #ecologate
*sigh* MT @duffy_ma: For #ecologate, start here: listserv.umd.edu/cgi-bin/wa then go here: listserv.umd.edu/cgi-bin/wa and: listserv.umd.edu/cgi-bin/wa
RT @duffy_ma: Maybe we need to start #happyacademicparent as partial antidote to #ecologate
One of the funniest moments on #ecologate came when people realized that the messages were archived and searchable. #oops
Someone should really write up #ecologate, with some of the relevant quotes, but as someone without a kid I don't know if it should be me.

.@kejames This prompted a rash of people criticizing the mother for bringing her baby in the field, and devolved from there. #ecologate
.@kejames The discussions in Ecolog started with a woman asking for tips for backpacking with an infant: http://bit.ly/Jztzkr #ecologate
In some ways, #ecologate has been useful because it's brought to light the institutional sexism many assumed was a thing of the past.
Many others were truly surprised that such sexist attitudes about women/mothers in academia were so widespread in ecology. #ecologate
Several female grad students expressed that the #ecologate conversations had them questioning whether they could go into academia at all.
I've gotten tons of responses off-list to my post about work-life balance to ECOLOG. Many people expressed embarrassment about #ecologate.
The discussions #womeninscience and motherhood on ECOLOG-L got so frustrating, I finally posted: http://bit.ly/JWTrGv #ecologate
RT @duffy_ma: I liked these #ecologate replies from Lis Nelis: http://bit.ly/HRDDUI and http://bit.ly/HRDCQt
MT @duffy_ma: BTW: The original e-mail that spurred #ecologate simply asked for a rec on an infant carrier that would be good for fieldwork
If it's "more common for women to leave positions because of motherhood," I'd argue that's because of the positions , not women. #ecologate
Why is it that not once during the #ecologate discussions has anyone brought up that it's the system that's broken, not the participants?
The take-home of #ecologate seems to be "Don't have kids, women, you'll ruin science. If you do, you're a bad mom AND a bad scientist."
I just read the #ecologate archives (http://bit.ly/IDTZhW and am shocked at the hostility to #womeninscience, esp with babies in the field.
@kzelnio @liveinsymbiosis @duffy_ma And by listening. There is a lot out there on how/why diversity in #STEM is important. #ecologate
THIS. RT @kzelnio: #Ecologate @liveinsymbiosis @duffy_ma sometimes, scis who feel wronged use equal opp as scapegoat 4 own deficiencies
