The #EdictOfExpulsion, aka the #AlhambraDecree, was signed by Isabella I of Castile & Ferdinand II of Aragon on #ThisDayInHistory in 1492. Violent persecution had already forced 2/3 of #Spain's Jews to convert. The remainder now had to leave penniless or join them in Catholicism.

The #WhitehallConference determined, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1655, that nothing in the 1290 #EdictOfExpulsion barred #Jews from returning to England. A #Sephardic community soon set up in London. Expelling Jews was a tactic used by European states to seize assets & pay off debts.
