The new directive aligns with the department's current review of options that support expanding educational choice for military-connected families. That review was initiated in January, within Executive Order 14191, in which President Donald J. Trump outlined the administration's focus on expanding educational freedom for American families.
DoD families may get the chance to use public funds to underwrite #homeschool and private school choice next year.

Tennessee General Assembly HB 0552 by *Warner (SB 0494) by *Bowling Education - As introduced, enacts the "Family Right to Educational Emancipation (FREE) Act," which creates a new category of independent home schools that are not subject to the data collection, reporting, or assessment requirements applicable to existing independent home school programs and that exempts such home school students and parents from compulsory school attendance requirements; prohibits the department of safety from conditioning the issuance of a driver license or learner's permit on a school-aged applicant's attendance record or enrollment status. - Amends TCA Title 37; Title 49; Title 50 and Title 55.
In Tennessee, families have several educational opportunities for their children in grades K-12, including home schooling or home education. Tennessee state law (Tenn. Code Ann. § 49-6-3050(a)(1)) identifies a home school as a “school conducted or directed by a parent or parents or a legal guardian or guardians for their own children.” The law identifies two ways parents or legal guardians may choose to home school their children: independent home school or enrollment in an approved church-related non-public school as defined by Tenn. Code Ann. § 49-50-801. Sometimes parents or legal guardians can choose a third option for managing their child’s education from home by enrolling their child in an approved accredited online school. This option does not meet the definition of a home school as defined in Tennessee state law; however, it provides an alternative to a traditional brick-and-mortar school by allowing the student to attend their online school from home. Requirements for home school vary depending upon the type of program selected by the family. Read more about each option below.
Tennessee parents rights peeps are pushing a new homeschool bill - the "Family Right to Educational Emancipation (FREE) Act". Bill text does not appear to be live yet but the summary is troubling. Currently TN has a test requirement for 5th, 7th, & 9th graders.
