airway management should be evaluted promptly. Empiric abx for #epiglottitis include iv cefotaxine, ceftriaxone or amp-sulbactam for strep, H inf, meningococci. Tx against staph aureus if bacterial tracheitis cannot be excluded

Pediatric #epiglottitis abrupt illness, fever, toxic, dysphagia, sore throat, hoarse voice, dtridor, drooling, tripod postion, cough uncommon
Adult most have odynophagia, sore thorat, 20-40% have fever, drooling or stridor

Adult #epiglottitis often invloves more of supraglottic structures & rarely associated w/bacteremia <15%, when pathogen is identified its strep pneumoniae, strep pyogenes or neisseria meningitidis

Pediatric #epiglottitis is localized, invasive #Haemophilus influenze type b infection of supraglottic area, including epiglottis, that can be associated w/bacteremia (60-98%), routine vaccine has largely eliminated this
