Glacial Erratic, deposited at the end of the last ice age, 16,000 years ago. Boulders weighing several tons (like the one pictured and bigger) were carried along with the ice flow.

The Erratics
Lysanne Larose - March 1 to March 31, 2025

When hiking in the forest, you often come across huge boulders, piled up or scattered, covered in moss and lichen and sometimes even crowned with a tree.

Ferried by glaciers over 100,000 years, they were dropped randomly into our landscapes at the end of the Ice Age. Geologists have named them erratic boulders.

These wandering rocks have long piqued our curiosity, inspiring writings, legends, scientific research - and sometimes even climbing enthusiasts. For artist Lysanne Larose, these erratic boulders represent an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

Whether it's their metaphorical dimension of forced migration, their role in the creation of the forest floor, the myths associated with them, or their simple charisma, she never tires of observing them. This exhibition is designed to share that fascination with the public.

Sound installation: Flock of Nazguls
Curators: Debbie Foster and Luke Havekes

A mossy boulder sculpture with two accessory "stones" that can be arranged freely, giving the user a hand in the creative process. The surface is highly textured with gray and mossy glazes, tiny hits of yellow and orange underglaze playing at being lichen. It's one of my personal favourites. The two accessory stones fit in your hand; the larger piece is about 12 inches to a side and can be positioned in any orientation.

"Mossy" is part of my #Erratics set. I especially like how the glazes came out here. Trying to replicate a mossy, lichen-y surface over a stony glaze was a fun challenge.

"Suitcase Blues (2024)" is an eight-piece sculpture that can be arranged however you like. All the pieces can fit in your palm. One piece, with blue washes, is like a boulder-suitcase, giving this set its name, and there's a humanoid like rock sitting on top. The rest are boulders. All pieces are made of a brown-firing clay, layered with pastel-tinted terra sigillatas, and later scribbled with sinuous lines of colour pencils, in an almost childlike manner (I think of exiled children when I do this). The lines are meant to evoke the many roads migrants, deportees and refugees wander in search of safety.

"Suitcase Blues." My #Erratics can also be viewed metaphorically. Ripped from the land & carried by glaciers, they stand here for all animals & humans uprooted by enormous forces, such as fire, flood, drought, war, oppression, deportation. A pretty pastel set for a grim reality.

A trio of ceramic objects shaped like rocks. Two small ones and a larger one. They are coated in pale stained terra sigillatas, dotted with pastel glazes. Once they were finished, I drew lines with colour pencils linking the dots like networks of cities and roads.
This is about how these wandering rocks can be a metaphor for forced migration, for women, men, children and animals being driven from their homes by forces much bigger (war, drought, floods, famine, crime, oppression, loss of habitat) than themselves and seeking a new place to live...

One of the largest Erratics in the set, this sculpture is inspired by the boulders and rocks ferried by glaciers for 100,000 years and dropped will-nilly at the end of the ice age. Slowly, life returned in the landscape, bushes and trees, mosses and lichen reappeared. It was coil built and glazed with various stony and mossy-looking glazes I designed, and fired three times to achive the desired results. Some cold work afterwards to polish it up.

Photo is of a large grayish object with greenish patches on a dark backgroud. There are cracks in the surface that have been filled with a golden finish.

A large stoneware object that looks like a boulde atop pebbles. It's a wood fired Erratic, in browns and yellows, with a dozen companion stones, some with hits of gold. I like how you can arrange these any way you like. Personally, I like it when it appears like the small stones are stealing away with the big one. Sometimes, I perch one on top, so it can direct the gang below. It's a playful piece.

A ceramic sculpture that is made of three large 'rocks' tumbled together, with three smaller 'rocks' atop each, in an almost but not quite figurative group. The larger figure is in shades of red, the medium on the left is greenish, while the smallest is in yellow tones. There's a white crackle glaze on top, and there are drips and streaks, suggesting weathering. It's a very textural piece. The base clay is red-brown. This is about people being forced from their homes, and not knowing where to go, really.

A jumbled stack of colourful little objects that can be held in your hand with what looks like maps on them. The base surface is in soft shades of pink, yellow & green, with pastel glaze dots and colour pencil lines linking the dots together to form networks. Two of the objects look like abstracted figured, one kneeling, one reclining on its side. I made this thinking of the people who have been forced from their homes unto roads around the world by conflict, war, famine, crime, climate change and more, and are seeking to find a new place to call home or at least somewhere safe.

As part of my year-long Clay Cohorts (@cohorts.bsky.social), my mentor challenged me to try terra sig on smaller works. I came up with these #Erratics, which can be arranged in any way. This particular set speaks to forced migrations and looking for a new home. #Ceramics #ForcedMigration

I guess I better start posting some of my work. First up, a piece from my #Erratics set, which is inspired by the large boulders to tiny pebbles that were ferried by glaciers and dropped willy-nilly across the landscape when the ice age ended, after which trees and plants grew around them.
