BANISHED, Northern Region, Ghana - 2024 by Claire Thomas Fusheina, a widow and mother of five, returns to the hut where she has lived in exile for six years. She is one of hundreds of women in northern Ghana accused of witchcraft, often by their own families or communities, and forced to seek refuge in so-called “witch camps.” These women are not there by choice: most flee or are sent away because to remain in their villages would mean risking their lives. Accusations of witchcraft exist beyond the reach of formal law yet are deeply entangled with social and structural inequality. They often arise from personal disputes, jealousy, or local misfortunes, and are almost always gendered.
