The picture shows an altermagnetic crystal, in which not only the directions of spin polarization alternate on neighboring magnetic atoms, but also the atomic shapes themselves – as shown by tilting the dumbbell-shaped electron densities in two different directions. The blue beamline illustrates the photoemission experiment on a synchrotron that was used to demonstrate altermagnetism.
