EPITAPH OF L. SINICIUS REGINUS, C2-C3? CLOISTER OF S. PAOLO FUORI LE MURA D(is) M(anibus) s(acrum). / L(ucio) Sinicio Regino / praetori, tribuno plebi, quaestori / provinciae Macedoniae. This panel comes from a larger tomb, probably from the Via Ostiensis necropolis like most of the inscriptions in this cloister. "(Tomb) sacred to the Manes. To Lucius Sinicius Reginus, prætor, tribune of the plebs, quæstor of the province of Macedonia." This little list of Reginus' career posts is a cursus honorum in reverse, with the most important role first, prætor, almost certainly the urban prætor, a judge of Roman citizens. Previously, one grade down, he was tribune of the plebs, a once-important role now mostly subsumed into the emperorship, but with various minor and ceremonial tasks. Before that, he had been quæstor of the province of Macedonia, in charge of the public purse. This is probably not a fake, but many such were made in the C15 to sell to collectors.
#EpigraphyTuesday takes us into the #cloister of S. Paolo fuori le Mura in #Rome, to find the #epitaph of a #senator, L. Sinicius Reginus, decorated with six #fasces and a #sella #curulis. C2-C3 CE. The script is strangely tiny and sparse for such a large #tabula. Is this a fake? #AncientBluesky 🏺
