A very wide panorama of a river plain between craggy sandstone gorge walls, seen from the top of the rock wall forming one side of a gorge. The other side of the gorge, which is another high rocky wall, is hundreds of metres away, and most of the plain is dry sand, with the river while still large, only a small fraction of the width. The rock walls are 30 to 50 metres high, and the first 15 metres or so is white, from regular erosion, while the remainder above the high-water mark is much darker. The river disappears around a bend in both directions.
Part of the Geikie Gorge, Fitzroy river, Western Australia
The scale of this gorge is amazing. The river in flood fills the gorge from side to side; the white high-water mark clearly visible on the gorge wall.
