Simon Campbell on Substack This week has been productive. Our recording studio—aka sonic laboratory—is progressing rapidly and the mixing console and electronics should be ready for installation by the end of next week. Yesterday, we received a pile of acoustic panels and bass traps from GIK Acoustics, which will complement the mountain of custom BBC-designed panels we've had since 2014, which have traveled with us throughout Europe since being made in Spain back in 2014. We're now ready to install everything! ////// Later, @Dave Boyd visited and following lunch, we worked on two songs for our Vibrationists project's live set. We created a new arrangement of Take Time To Grow Old for Wurlitzer, bass, and guitar, and also developed a new song, Hey Girl, for our upcoming album. It’s always tricky playing with a new rhythm engine as @Suzy Starlite has to bond with their unique and individual groove, but it's sounding fantastic and we're looking forward to next week's session. Dave and his wonderful partner Freya are coming for dinner on Saturday which should be great fun. ////// I'm currently writing an article about our Date Nights, which should be published next week and Starlite is finishing another featuring our latest Hounds Of Rock, Edith and Françoise—aka the squeakers. Simon Campbell on Substack Yesterday marked a significant milestone in our musical journey. We found a musical partner who's a perfect fit in many ways. As you may know from previous updates, we were introduced to @Dave Boyd by @Rhonda and @Jeff Boehlert. We had met him twice before: once at Cafe Central in Foz do Arelho, and again a couple of weeks later at his home near Bombarral, where we enjoyed a wonderful evening of food, conversation, and company with his partner, Freya. We chatted about music, politics, and life, but yesterday was the first time we had played music together. Dave hails from Belfast in Northern Ireland and arrived bang on time, bringing two drums: a wooden djembe—no skin—and a custom-made bodhran. Neither @Suzy Starlite or I are familiar with these instruments and were amazed by the range of sounds Dave could produce from these seemingly simple drums. He's a true maestro and within minutes it was clear that he'd be a great addition to our new trio and perfect for our next album which is primarily acoustic. Dave is also a great keyboard player, arranger, producer and programmer who can help us performing our more recent progressive material—something we lacked on our last tour. Our drums have something we call Instant Slide Tuning. This lacing and bead setup allows the drum the be tuned by simply sliding a bead.
