I want one UI to wrap all the other services for, to carry on conversations with all the content across services and those underlying services are invisible to me. This does not seem like a big ask on the technology side.

Is Frendica really any good? The way Facebook got big is, it slurped up the extended social network of your contacts and their contacts, etc. Any service that worked that network effect might grow similarly; any that doesn't, probably won't.
