Inflation Rate between 1980-2026 | Inflation Calculator $1 in 1980 is now equivalent to $3.97 in 2026.

With an average of 3.03% inflation since 1980, a dollar today only buys 25% of what it used to.

Our ruler has decreased by a quarter.

This is why we need Gauge Theory to describe economics.

An infographic titled "The Gauge Theory of Money" comparing two economic landscapes. On the left, a "Low Cost of Living (LCOL)" area is shown as a gentle green hill where the "Survival Point" is reached at a low elevation, labeled $2,000. On the right, a "High Cost of Living (HCOL)" area is depicted as a steep, jagged mountain where the "Survival Point" is much higher, labeled $6,000+. Both start at a $0 baseline, but a character at the bottom of the mountain faces a much more difficult climb to reach basic survival than the character at the hill. A slider at the top illustrates that money is not a static measure.

The gap between zero and survival is a "hill" in low-cost areas, but a "mountain" in high-cost cities.

A universal baseline—like UBI indexed to local cost of living—would establish a more consistent gauge for everyone.

Understanding the gauge theory of money reveals why our current system is broken:

One problem with using zero as the baseline is that it obscures the vastly different values of a dollar.

We pretend a "dollar" is a universal constant, but it's actually highly sensitive to its environment. Gauge Theory allows us to keep the "laws of economics" consistent even when the local definition of value is shifting under our feet.

Thinking of a dollar as a "fixed unit" is a mistake of modern finance.

In Gauge Theory, the "ruler" changes based on context, just like money. A dollar in rural Oregon ≠ a dollar in SF.

It’s all about the relative field.

A rocket ship ascends through the center of the frame, surrounded by a glowing, waving measuring tape that resembles a measuring tape, marked with currency symbols for dollars and euros. In the background, a wireframe map of the world is overlaid with complex mathematical equations. The overall aesthetic is a blend of deep space exploration and advanced theoretical physics, illustrating the intersection of global economics and mathematical theory.

We often treat economics like a hard physical science, but it's more like a living social system.

The "math" of money is still being written.

If the ruler you use to measure value keeps changing size, you don't need a better ruler—you need Gauge Theory. 🦋

Just wrapped my head around Gauge Theory! 🤯 It's like the universe has a secret symmetry that dictates how particles interact. Basically, the laws of physics don't change, no matter how you "measure" them. #Physics #GaugeTheory #Science #DeepThoughts
