The #Geminid meteor shower, *apparently* radiating from #Jupiter (but actually cantered on Castor in the constellation Gemini). The meteors are debris from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. Taken from #Portugal on the 13/14th December.

Many concentric, curved star trails — some white, others bluish and yellowish — arc across the image, while a bright, straight meteor streak cuts sharply through them.

A gorgeous swirl of pinks and purples light up the sky before sunset - from the opposite direction of my photos. This time FROM the mountains looking toward our little town.
This sunset photo is more muted, with wispy vegetation in the lower left corner, and layers and layers of mountains (at least 5) as a gray-peach sky fills the upper third of the image.
This would be an utterly gorgeous photo if not for the big orb of light on the side of a mountain whose base ends in Copper Creek. To the left you can see stair-step mining from a past (failed) attempt to find copper. In the upper right you can see at least 3 drill sites, plus the one in the foreground.
While there are no meteors photographed, we saw at least a dozen -- and two that seemed to be chasing one another with a good length of visibility!

Rates of #Geminid meteors are decreasing after the peak, but this evening into the morning of the 15th you could see around 10 to 20 meteors per hour from a dark location. The Moon doesn't rise until around 04:00 UT, leaving most of the sky dark for meteor watching.

Just saw a #Geminid
A view of the sky looking east/south-east at 10pm tonight, made using Stellarium. Gemini is in the East with the two brightest stars in the constellation sitting one directly above the other. The radiant (boxed position, where the meteors will appear to originate) is just above two bright stars in Gemini known as Castor and Pollux. Jupiter is below Pollux and to the right. Orion is at roughly the same height above the horizon, but around to the south-east.
The #Geminid #MeteorShower peaks tonight! Best time to look is between 10pm and 2am when the Moon rises and spoils the fun. Meteors will appear to come from a position in the constellation of Gemini (the box in the image). Look out for Jupiter too, just below the two bright stars, and Orion nearby!

The #Geminid #meteor shower reaches maximum this weekend and we were lucky to enjoy clear cloudless sky along the #OregonCoast. As expected, we saw more satellites than meteors, but it was totally worth driving to a rest stop north of Neskowin to get away from the light pollution.
