In Judaism, holy books aren’t thrown away. When sacred texts wear out, they’re treated with dignity and buried in the earth. Because words that carry G-d’s name never become trash—only honored. This is called genizah.

Mottled brown paper leaf of a manuscript on a blue background. Approximatley 20 lines of bold Hebrew script cover the page, with text from Genesis 37-38 in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judaeo-Arabic. A yellow label below shows the classmark in Cambridge University Library T-S B1.9

An excellent piece of scholarship on #Jewish intellectual history, this is Nadia Vidro's contribution to our Cairo #Genizah anniversary volume (it's free! doi.org/10.1163/9789...). She proves that 2 disputed texts by the famed #medieval rabbi, Saadya Gaon, are, in fact, the same book. #skystorians

Fragment of a pachment manuscript with beautiful medieval Arabic script from the essay "On Squaring and Circling," by al-Jahiz.

Fragment of a pachment manuscript with beautiful medieval Arabic script from the essay "On Squaring and Circling," by al-Jahiz.

Page from "On Squaring and Circling" by al-Jahiz (d. 868/869 CE), found - somewhat unexpectedly - in the #Cairo #Genizah. It is one of the oldest surviving copies of any of al-Jahiz’s works (ca. 10th century). Also absolutely brilliant calligraphy. #manuscriptmonday
