a striking vintage 1950s original relief print on paper titled "Herbst Blüten" (Autumn Flowers) and numbered 175 out of an edition of 200 by artist Hermann Ober (1920-1997, b. Germany). A fantastic mid century abstract modernist composition by an internationally recognized post-war German artist! Here's a short bio that I put together from various sources online:

-------------------------
Ober was born in the town of Freilassing - a suburb of Salzburg, Austria just across the border in Germany, in 1920. He studied with the artist Engelbert Staller, a church painter from his home town, and had his first exhibition of his artwork at the tender age of 17.
Ober was called up for service in 1939 and served in the ‘mountain troops’ a local reserve in the area. In 1942 he was wounded by a grenade explosion, and he subsequently lost his leg. He returned to his home town where he continued to study art during the final years of the war.
After the war ended, Ober studied with Slavi Soucek in Salzburg, and in Munich where he completed his ‘master painter’ degree. This was where he was first exposed to the international Modernism movement, and he resolved that abstract art was his main interest going forward. In 1951 he was a founding member of the Salzburg Group.
His artworks are in the collections of many museums worldwide including the V&A in London, the Museum of Modern Art in Kamakura Japan, the Cincinnati Museum in Ohio, and many museums throughout Germany and Austria.
----------------------------

This original relief print was made by the artist in the late 1950s, and measures 19-1/2" by 15-1/4". It is signed, numbered and titled in pencil by the artist at front as shown. There are also gallery notes at back as shown from the Eric Locke Gallery of San Francisco, and Eric Locke purchased the artwork directly from the artist in the late 1950s.
Excellent vintage condition - never been framed, just slight yellowing to the paper, but no damage of any kind.

From the mid-1920s until 1933, Paul Klee taught a design class for the weaving workshop of the Bauhaus, a German art school combining ne art and craft. Concurrent with his classroom interaction with student weavers, Klee began to use increasingly unusual fabrics in his paintings, including cotton, jute, and silk, to explore the interaction between paint and the many distinct textures of his supports. In late works such as Exotics, painted on coarse burlap, Klee recalled his formative journeys to Tunisia and Egypt in 1914 and 1928, respectively. While these trips to North Africa, then under occupation by France and Great Britain, originally positioned him as an adventurer in the eyes of his contemporaries, the rough-hewn, woven character of the painting’s support was an expression of his long-standing interest in weaving.

Directly affected by the Nazis’ ascent to power, Paul Klee was dismissed in 1933 from his teaching post at Dusseldorf Academy, where he had spent two years after leaving the Bauhaus. Exiled to Switzerland, Klee suffered physically and psychologically, and his artistic output diminished significantly. Between 1937 and 1940, however, Klee regained artistic momentum and produced several hundred paintings and over 1,500 drawings. In these later works, Klee continued to experiment with unusual media and techniques to produce multidimensional effects. Dancing Girl also reveals Klee’s limitless humor—his signature at the lower right was made by a monogrammed handkerchief, which he laid over the surface to begin his painting.

Paul Klee (18 December 1879 - 29 June 1940) was born in Munchenbuchsee, Switzerland, and is considered both a German and a Swiss painter. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. He was also a student of orientalism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually mastered colour theory, and wrote extensively about it; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory (Schriften zur Form und Gestaltungslehre), published in English as the Paul Klee Notebooks, are considered so important for modern art that they are compared to the importance that Leonardo da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting had for Renaissance. He and his colleague, the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, both taught at the German Bauhaus school of art, design and architecture. His works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes childlike perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality.
