This black-and-white photograph shows Goðafoss, the “Waterfall of the Gods” in northern Iceland. The wide, powerful river drops in a broad semicircle over a rocky cliff, creating thick curtains of foaming white water that plunge into a turbulent pool below. Mist rises at the base of the falls, softening the outlines of the dark volcanic rocks that frame the scene in the foreground. Beyond the waterfall, the landscape opens into a vast plateau of rolling hills under a sky scattered with clouds. Goðafoss is not only dramatic in appearance but also steeped in legend. Around the year 1000, when Iceland officially adopted Christianity as its national religion, the lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði Þorkelsson is said to have thrown the last images of the old pagan gods into this waterfall, giving it its name - “the waterfall of the gods.”

A waterfall reminds us that every mighty river begins as tiny streams, flowing together until they can no longer be stopped.
