Great Falls, on the Androscoggin River, separates the cities of Lewiston and Auburn, Maine. They were a major power source for the 19th century mills that led to the development of the area. There are three distinct rock formations, including granite and basalt, the oldest of which settled from 420 to 435 million years ago. On the day of our visit, the water was fairly high, from spring runoff. The river starts south of Errol, NH, near the Maine border and flows throught the White Mountains, across Maine to Merrymeeting Bay, where is meets The Kennebec on the way to the Atlantic.
