A tricolored heron takes off from a shallow pond with long wings fully extended to the sides, long legs dangling and long neck slightly curved. The bird is showing mostly soft blue with white on the wing tips, down the front of the very long neck and in a small tuft at the back of the head. The long bill is blue toward the face and almost black at the tip. You can barely see the lavender coloring on the back of the neck. The pond from which it is taking off shows golden from the early morning sun.

Three Royal Terns are standing in shallow water. The one in front has its head back, beak open and wings spread. He or she seemed pretty excited about something. The two others to the rear of the photo were quite chill. This tern is a mostly white and gray bird with a jet black cap/crest and bright orange beak.

Standing on a trail made of Nature's natural exfoliating material, next to an almost dry creek. A wooden bridge crosses the creek and passes through trees of various vintages: Some, thousands of years old. Just beyond the bridge, conjoined twins, definitely senior citizens. The air is thick and the sun's light barely finds the ground through the lush canopy. This is an August shot, so this is as dry as it gets in here.

The walls of surrounding buildings are peeling and deteriorating, but you can see how stunning the architecture was many decades ago. Santiago de Cuba is (in my view) Cuba's diamond in the rough, fewer tourist, and for better or worse more authentic. Despite their perpetual challenges with man-made and environmental disasters they remain kind, and as warm as the Cuban sun.
