Unfinished sculpture of a malevolent sheep's head on armature wire.
Started a model of the Lamb from Mervyn Peake's Boy in Darkness. I think I have got the quiet malevolence sorted.

Horror writers should consider themselves lucky that Mervyn Peake didn't write in their genre.
The Lamb is the most unsettling and terrifying entity I can remember. The way Peake builds the power and horror of him is masterful.

I think you ought to name them 'Master Chalk'!
#Gormenghast
(Yes, we know Master Chalk is a rook, shhhhhh. Shush.)
The chef, a mixture of emotions competing within him as might a group of worms make battle for sovereignty in the belly of an ox, peers over Fuchsia’s shoulder.
When I mentioned outlandish metaphor, I mean this kind of thing. Sentences that take you in gloriously unexpected directions even in gratuitous asides #Gormenghast
The baleful mood extends, of course, to the landscape around the castle:
"Ahead lay Gormenghast Mountain in all its permanence, a sinister thing as though drawn out of the earth by sorcery as a curse on all who viewed it." #Gormenghast

My Gormenghastsona is a radical professor who wants to foment rebellion among the servants but is too nervous to say anything outright so just wanders around the kitchens quoting nonsensical theory and getting in everyone's way. #Gormenghast
sketchbook page open to show two portraits in profile. They are skinny people, a man looking right and a lady looking left. It's Dr Prune and Irma from Gormenghast.
A thing about Bsky I love is every couple months rolling through the new #gormenghast posts and seeing all sorts of new art. I felt like I was alone with this weird book for so long, and now more and more people love it and share things.
Anyway here's some Prunes.

Duckett's Grove was the main house of a large country estate in Co Carlow, occupied from 1745 to 1916 and destroyed by fire in 1933. Now a crumbling old ruin, gutted by fire a hundred years ago and abandoned ever since. Rooks and ravens have taken up residence for extra goth cred.
The corner of the main building. The windows have been bricked up and plants are growing from several places on the roof and facade.
In another corner is this grand looking entrance. Originally an ordinary (if large) country house, these castellated features were added much later to remodel the house in the faux Gothic revival of the early 1800s.
The rear of the estate seen from the gardens.
Duckett's Grove is how I'd imagined Castle Gormenghast to look. It's a classic fantasy novel but I must admit I only knew of it because of The Cure song.

It only just now crossed my mind how obvious a precursor to the #Addams family, #Gormenghast is.
what will you reap?
what will you see?
who will you be?
will you have wings?
will you have eyes?
will your blood run warm?
will you dwell in the dark?
or in the daylight?

Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast illustrated bookmarks by french illustrator Lucy Dreams. Whimsical and mesmerising watercolour and ink illustration printed on three bookmarks. The large Gormenghast castle with its multitude of towers is drawn in Indian ink and dominated by mountains shrouded in mist, painted in watercolour.

AI-generated and somewhat inaccurate rendering of the title character's "Earling" ceremony, showing Titus on a raft in a lake while hundreds of people wearing sackcloth watch from the trees.
Gormenghast Book 1: Titus Groan
It's a book filled with fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, and miracles!

And finally, 10. #Gormenghast, by Mervyn Peake. The second book in the Gormenghast Trilogy, and imho its most consequential one. While young Titus Groan is a bit of a drip, you're here for the drama of Steerpike/Fuchsia. The climactic fight to the death in the floodwaters of Gormenghast? HELL YEAH

Note to Self
I need to reread #Gormenghast.
Also it occurs to me that Peake's #Gormenghast fits on Chandrilla perfectly. Not to mention Ghor.
I wonder if Gilroy is a fan.

My latest #BookTube video is a chatty review of Mervyn Peake's Titus Groan, the first book of his #Gormenghast series. It's long, slow, strange, impossible to categorise... and it's maybe my favourite read of the year so far! youtu.be/E1BG5L1ayPU
If the current state of the publishing industry were less risk-averse, if it published a wider range of excellences, I might not have found #Gormenghast so exhilarating. It felt like escaping from a bus tour of the standard sights and traveling with the locals in the back country.
Photo of a painting on a black table. There are two paintbrushes resting to the right of the painted image. The painting is a watercolor of a tarot card, which would be the Empress but the character and objects have been changed to a large red-haired woman in a black dress with a red book marked with a gold "G" and a staff with a white raven on it. The text at the bottom reads "the Countess". She is Gertrude Groan, the 76th Countess of Gormenghast.
Finished painting for "Tarot Esoterica", a group show at Sideshow Gallery in Chicago 🌟 June 20 🌟
