They’d danced to this tune for so many eons that it was impossible for Aziraphale to forget the steps: one large stride forwards, two to the left. Push at Crowley until he could push no more, until Crowley’s increasingly barbed comments speared him through. Aziraphale would then step away from Crowley’s bluster in an elegant retreat. That was exactly what his snapping, snarling serpent was expecting; Crowley’s fangs shone dangerously in the low light, his eyes burnished by emotion and far too revealing of a delicate hope smothered by anger. This fragile bubble of intimacy was building *between* them instead of *around*, and Crowley was trying his best to shove Aziraphale out of it completely. No. Not this time. Aziraphale pushed away an errant curl that had fallen over Crowley’s forehead.
