A light-skinned young woman (likely a teenager) is shown from the chest up against a smoky, vertically brushed background of grays and warm browns. She faces forward with a quiet, steady gaze to our left. Her wide blue-gray eyes have softly shadowed lids. Her mouth closed in a small, unsmiling line of rose color. Her chestnut-brown hair is cut in a short bob with blunt bangs as the ends flare outward at the sides, and a small pink hair clip holds a lock near her right temple. American artist Zama Vanessa Helder models the face with pale washes and gentle contouring rather than heavy outlines, keeping the skin luminous while sharpening her brows, lashes, and nose with fine, controlled strokes. The girl wears a vivid green top with a large white collar. The collar and shoulder bands are decorated with repeating leaf-and-flower motifs edged like lace. A long black necktie drops from the collar’s opening, creating a stark vertical accent that echoes the darkness behind her. The background feels like a veil of diluted pigment that's streaked, almost like rain so the girl seems to emerge from mist rather than a specific room. The green fabric is mottled with watery blooms, letting the medium’s transparency show through the calm, centered pose.

Dated 1935, this portrait sits early in Helder’s career, around the period when she studied at the Art Students League in New York. Within a few years, she would be working through Washington State’s WPA art program (1937) and producing her best-known suite of hard-edged watercolors: 22 sheets recording the construction of Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River (1939–41). Here, that same precision is turned inward with the crisp collar patterning and the disciplined handling of light make the sitter feel both present and protected. The fashionable bob suggests 1930s “modern girl” self-possession, while the title without a name invites us to look without a set story of her life.

The Silence After the Storm – Not You Again The Silence After the Storm By Alfons-Scholing Oct 5, 2025 #authentiek #creatief #dailyprompt #educatief #eerlijk #empathisch #ethisch #helder #integer #liefdevol #onderzoekend #rebels #rustig #standvastig #uniek The frustration is gone. Not buried, not suppressed, but gone, as if it was never a native part of me to begin with. The exhaustion has lifted. It feels like a fundamental law of physics has been restored: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, and mine is a sudden, buoyant lightness.

Pacific-northwest U.S. artist Zama Vanessa Helder (aka Z. Vanessa Helder) depicts fellow American female artist Blanche Morgan Losey seated in a dark wooden chair at a small, square, red table. Her posture is relaxed but composed. She rests her forearms on the table, one slightly overlapping the other. Her gaze is directed away from us, towards our right, suggesting an introspective state.

The woman has styled her dark brown hair in a fashionable updo for the late 1930s. She is wearing a collared shirt in a muted olive green, with a darker brown, almost burgundy, vest dress over it. The fabric appears smooth and slightly glossy. Her makeup is understated; a hint of red lipstick is visible. Her expression is serious and serene, neither sad nor happy, but contemplative.

On the red table next to her sits a small, potted plant with large, dark green leaves and a slender, mottled stem. The pot is a simple, earthenware brown color. One leaf appears to be browned, suggesting it's not in perfect health. Underneath the plant is a small, gray bowl, likely a cachepot. The table's red surface is highly polished, reflecting light.

Helder, who grew up around Seattle and Spokane, was acclaimed for her “precisionist” scenes of Eastern Washington. Apparently, she was also known for strolling downtown Seattle with her pet skunk.

Losey painted in styles from realist to surreal, and also created sets for the local Negro Repertory Theater Company and Seattle Opera. She loved the details of life. She was a member of the Women Painters of Washington, the Northwest Watercolor Society, and the National Association of Women Artists in New York. During the 1930s and ’40s, she worked in the precisionist style—hard-edged, clean-lined watercolors that focused on design, color, and form. Losey lived multiple artistic lives: in addition to her watercolors and WPA work, she was the director of Frederick & Nelson’s interior design department for more than 20 years in post-WWII Seattle.

Ik hoop dat meerdere BBB-ers een #Helder momentje krijgen.
