A reconstruction of the early bird Hesperornis regalis. A cranial reconstruction is labled with features of the skull and bones that are hypothesized by some researchers to relate to certain types of tissue covering, namely, flexible and loose oral tissues like "lips" but without muscles; or a rigid or semi-rigid keratin covering, like a beak in birds. Some birds have a softer bill, like most ducks, but this isn't suggested here. An overlay on the skull describes the different types of indicated tissues: lip-like structures only corresponding to regions where teeth are present, otherwise there's indicators for beak. A life-restoration lies below, comprised of dark blue and white, with a yellowed and pinkish snout.

#sciart of #Hesperornis and why I think reconstructions giving the face a full beak because one side of the jaw had one might be in error.

Note: This involves a broader question over mutually distinct regions of "toothy" vs "beaky" bone, and whether they can coexist. I--and others--argue "No."
