I have "finished" my remote presentation for the Internat'l Congress in History of Science in New Zealand, but cannot record it to submit. I think my program is faulty. I'll try recording on an older computer. Love the modern age. The talk is on the geological field work of John Herschel. #histgeo

Among the most consequential projects in the history of Earth science was the 1957-1958 International Geophysical Year (IGY), a crash program to study the planet through worldwide collaboration. In the midst of the Cold War and global decolonization, tens of thousands of scientists and citizen volunteers from East and West, North and South, crossed political and ideological lines for the IGY. What they discovered shapes much of what we know about our common planetary home today. March 24, 2025 12:00 PM - 1:15 PM 121 Bay State Road Register here BU Boston University Frederick S. Sad news indeed. Professor Goodman was a notable contributor to the field of Rock Engineering and the author of a wonderful historical book about the life of Karl Terzaghi. RIP

The tags I have been using are #phigeo #histgeo & #hpgeo (for both history & philosophy of geosciences)
There is not yet a History & Philosophy of Geosciences topic feed to pick them up, but hopefully soon. 😊
Rock Stars is a series of short biographies of geologists published by the Geological Society of America. Here's one on a Black Canadian geologist who made his way at Harvard. #histsci #histgeo

I visited the Isle of Wight in June to retrace some geological fieldwork of John Herschel. At the western end of the island is this scene. Left, Greg Good, 2024. Right, John Herschel, 1831. #histsci #histgeo
