Saw some ruins peaking mysteriously through the trees lining the Coventry Canal at Alvecote as I puttered past, and on further investigation found the remains of the mid-12th century Alvecote Priory.

The Golden Lion in Birmingham has quite a story. Built in the early 1600s, it originally stood on Deritend High Street and has lived many different lives over the centuries. In 1911, it was moved to Cannon Hill Park, where it later served as a cricket pavilion and refreshment room. For more than 20 years, however, it has stood empty, until support from Historic England allowed Birmingham Conservation Trust and the City Council to begin restoration.
I was very fortunate to be one of six people invited to take a hard-hat tour of the outside of the building. We viewed the Golden Lion from the scaffolding, and there were many highlights. For me, seeing a roof of timbers constructed in the 1600s and then transported several miles in 1910 was amazing. While the roof was in relatively good repair, the rest of the building requires much more attention.

Ely Cathedral, March 2024.

The cathedral can trace its origins back to an earlier abbey founded in 672 by St Etheldreda, this place has been dominating the Fens for well over a millennium — and it still takes your breath away.

The Blake Cottage Trust

Blake’s Cottage is starting to look exactly as he knew it!
Today we not only have a beautiful new thatch, but we have also lowered the eastern extension so that the cottage once again resembles Blake’s own depiction of it in Plate 28 of his epic Milton.

Visited the fashionable Donnington Castle in 2018.

Its twin-towered gatehouse was built in the 1380s for Sir Richard de Abberbury. During the Civil War, the castle endured a brutal 20-month siege, leaving it badly damaged.”
