The setting sun behind an Oak tree at the edge of a snow-covered field casts a huge shadow across the whiteness, making the tree’s trunk look massive. The tree’s bare, wintry branches are silhouetted against a pale blue, cloud-strewn sky.
It’s still mild in our Surrey village and snow is rare these days but when it comes the fields near our house are wondrous with the old Oaks casting black shadows on the whiteness.

A section of the village millpond has been colonised by the long thin leaves and blue flowers of Water-Forget-Me-Not. The light from the afternoon sun picks out different shades of green and makes the little flowers shine. It also reflects on the water in the pond, reflecting some of the plants, which grow near the wall by a road across from the mill building, now occupied by a computer firm.

This is known as a Mast Year, which occurs every five years or so when the trees overproduce their crop in order to ensure propagation after the squirrels and other small creatures have taken their share; two Horse Chestnuts hang in their knobbly green covering from the tree as the leaves turn brown; on the ground below the tree, the shells have burst open revealing the glossy brown chestnuts or Conkers as they are called in Britain. Small boys (and some adults) love to use these for tournaments in which a piece of string is threaded through the nut, knotted below, and the protagonists then attempt to smash each others’ conkers to smithereens. We are a belligerent race.

Low water in the village millpond, which is covered in green weed but the purple Loosestrife surrounding its banks is in full flower.
A large grey cat, one paw listlessly resting on the doorstep sits just inside a cottage on a mat. The white door is open wide and the interior is dark. The cottage’s red brick and black timbers can be seen around the door frame and under the step. To the right a Hollyhock grows against the wall with peachy white flowers and green leaves.
I am a fox terrier man but do have a soft spot for felines and the one I saw lounging in the doorway of a neighbour’s cottage this morning soaking up the sun was such a beauty I had to share.
