According to my favorite dictionary, Merriam-Webster, the first known use of gratitude was in 1565 and it rhymes with attitude, amplitude, and certitude. It is the state of being grateful. The word in the dictionary before gratitude is gratis: without charge or recompense, free. There is poetry in the dictionary if you look for it, and I don’t just mean the word and definition.
