ICARRD+20 Special Edition: Peasant Voices of La Via Campesina As part of the II International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ICARRD+20), held in Cartagena, Colombia from February 24 to 28, La Vía Campesina produced a series of podcasts that give voice to the peasants advocating for comprehensive and popular agrarian reform. Each episode provides a unique perspective on local and global issues, voicing those who shape our food systems and claim their rights and territories. **Nury Martínez, Fensuagro, CLOC – La Vía Campesina of Colombia – “Agrarian reform is about vibrant territories, power, culture, and sovereignty”** Nury Martínez, representative of the International Planning Committee for Food Sovereignty (CIP) and La Vía Campesina, explains that discussing agrarian reform is not limited to access to land. It is about building vibrant territories, promoting popular power, a culture of solidarity, collective organization, and food sovereignty. Her words inaugurated CIRADR+20, setting the stage for this international meeting. **Morgan Ody, Confederation Paysanne, ECVC of France – “Redistribution, Restitution, Recognition, and Regulation”** During the plenary session on the second day, Morgan Ody, general coordinator of La Vía Campesina, delivered a speech demanding urgent and comprehensive agrarian reform based on the framework of the 4Rs: Redistribution, Restitution, Recognition, and Regulation. This was a clear call to rethink land structures and defend campesino rights. **Jesús Vázquez, Organización Boricuá, CLOC – La Vía Campesina of Puerto Rico – “Transition is inevitable, but justice is not”** Jesús Vázquez points out that small producers feed 70% of the world’s population but control less than 20% of the land. He advocates for comprehensive agrarian reform as an essential condition for climate justice, which would increase food production, enhance biodiversity, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. **Susan Owiti, Kenyan Peasant League – “We demand recognition for our work”** Susan Owiti emphasizes the crucial role of rural women in food production and the preservation of traditional seeds, rejecting imported genetically modified seeds. She demands the celebration and recognition of women’s work in the fields, which feeds the world despite their invisibility. **Jessie MacInnis, National Farmers Union of Canada – “Without land access for youth, agroindustry will continue to control our food systems”** This episode explores the crisis of generational transition in agriculture and the importance of ensuring land rights for women, youth, and diverse communities. It highlights the struggles for equitable access to land, water, and resources and the challenges faced by rural communities against agroindustry and growing authoritarian dynamics. **Maria Daryl Leyesa, La Vía Campesina of the Philippines – “The work of rural women is not recognized as a basis for benefiting from agrarian reform”** Maria Daryl from PARAGOS Philippines condemns the persistent invisibility of rural women in agrarian reform policies. Despite their central role in agriculture and the rural economy, they are often excluded from policy formulations, even though their recognition is essential for true agrarian justice. **Perla Álvarez, CLOC – La Vía Campesina of Paraguay – “Our contribution as women prioritizes life, care, and the future”** Perla Álvarez from CONAMURI emphasizes the importance of a feminist approach to agrarian reform. Rural women seek not only justice and equality but also to protect life, the environment, and human well-being, ensuring a more equitable future for all. Their central message: prioritize life and care in social transformation. Around the world, struggles for land, water, and territories are hindered both by the legacy of colonialism and by current pressures from agroindustry, geopolitical conflicts, and the financialization of nature. Peasant communities and Indigenous Peoples are particularly affected, and food sovereignty is threatened. La Vía Campesina asserts that agrarian reform must be political and comprehensive, guaranteeing historical justice, collective rights, and equitable access to commons. **This vision is structured around the 4Rs: restitution, redistribution, recognition, and regulation**. The ICARRD+20 podcasts give voice to peasants worldwide and demonstrate that agrarian reform is fundamental for social, climate, and food justice. * * * This post is also available in Español. ### RELATED NEWS: 1.
