Top view of my first drop spindle. The whorl at the top is a clay disk that is glued to a wooden dowel. I painted the disk with several Posca paint markers and drew a few different patterns. The center ring is purple, followed by a thin ring of teal, then a thick ring of metallic gold. There is another ring of teal as the backdrop for the ring of purple flowers. Next, a ring made of alternating dots of metallic gold and teal with purple centers. A burgundy ring finishes the top of the whorl. Finally, the section that makes the outer edge of the whorl is painted in metallic gold. The wooden dowel has a gold cup hook that had been screwed into the top to catch the fibers during the spinning process.

Full view of the drop spindle. A wooden dowel makes the shaft, where the spun fibers will sit. The dowel is glued inside of the whorl, which is made of air dry clay. A gold cup hook is screwed into the top of the dowel to catch the fibers during the spinning process and keep some tension.

The drop spindle is complete! I decided to make a top whorl spindle first, but I will be making a supported spindle as my next project 😁✨🧶
