SO FAR, SO CLOSE by Pejac | Limited Edition On the 23rd of February, Pejac released his latest limited edition print, So Far, So Close: a work that was exhibited at the artist’s 2021 solo show in Berlin (APNEA) and was particularly liked by visitors. This delicate piece of art depicts a bird’s-eye view of a battle in an infinite trench. ‘‘Sometimes perceiving someone as a friend or foe is just a matter of perspective’’, Pejac comments in reference to his artistic rendition of the absurdity of combat. So Far, So Close comes in a run of only 60 copies, all hand-finished by the artist. These copies, measuring 110 x 80 cm, are the result of a painstaking multiphase production process that adds a novel feature to Pejac’s printmaking practice: the use of the monotype technique. Each hand-painted monotype ‘stains’ the Korean Kozo mulberry paper with ochre spots that are meant to accentuate certain parts of the actual image, making the scene just a tad more atmospheric. It’s worth pointing out that the result of the monotype treatment is different every time, making each copy absolutely unique. As the Kozo paper goes onto the photopolymer printing plate, it is at the same time glued on top of Velin d’Arches cotton paper, rendering the print two-layered and thereby increasing its aesthetic value. Once the print has been pulled off the plate by hand, Pejac applies different shades of acrylic and coloured pencils to different areas of the print, which makes it even more special. The name BÄST nods to the ways the artist re-imagined and 'bästardised' US culture. Prolific on the Brooklyn graffiti scene, he used the fabric of the city to create his works. Found objects, food waste and advertisements – nothing was off limits. “For my sculptures, most of the material I find washes up on a certain beach by Coney Island. Broken plastic bottles, wood, random junk that gets bleached by the sun and torn apart by waves.” BÄST layered these objects with spray-paint, collage and stencils. He also innovated on wheat-paste techniques with street art duo, FAILE, and made bizarre ‘fly tip’ puppets with Paul Insect.

These posters communicated not only products and services, but also community events and agendas. Technological advances made posters a thing of the past for many communities but, drive through an underdeveloped country or a low-income neighbourhood. The places where not everyone has a mobile phone, the internet, high-definition fibre optic television. The places where families use the bussing system or their own feet to go to work, the market or school. These are the places where paper-based outdoor advertising still has functionality. Whether it be political advertising, the announcement of community events, or product advertisements, paper posters adorn the more heavily trafficked areas. These posters often remain in place for years with walls accumulating poster over poster, and while the bottom layers rip, decay and rot, the top layers shine for all to see. The walls offer a story, a stand-alone piece of artwork, a time capsule and a tangible look into our past and present. This is the base or canvas for the "Streetscape" project. The collection and integration of worn and torn street posters from streets all over the world. Utilising paper street posters sourced from the art district of South Florida, Wynwood, this piece calls attention to the inevitable destruction and gentrification of the beautifully decorated Wynwood streets, walls and local business exteriors as developers execute their plans.
