See It On Your Wall

"So Far, So Close" by Pejac, 2022

The Art Scoop: Bird’s-eye view of a pale, foggy landscape with a single large oval trench cut into the ground, forming a ring around an empty centre. Along the trench line are tiny dark silhouettes of soldiers, clustered in places and spaced out in others, some carrying long rifles. The scene reduces the battle to one continuous, looping trench, a visual reference to the absurdity of combat.

SO FAR, SO CLOSE by Pejac | Limited Edition On the 23rd of February, Pejac released his latest limited edition print, So Far, So Close: a work that was exhibited at the artist’s 2021 solo show in Berlin (APNEA) and was particularly liked by visitors. This delicate piece of art depicts a bird’s-eye view of a battle in an infinite trench. ‘‘Sometimes perceiving someone as a friend or foe is just a matter of perspective’’, Pejac comments in reference to his artistic rendition of the absurdity of combat. So Far, So Close comes in a run of only 60 copies, all hand-finished by the artist. These copies, measuring 110 x 80 cm, are the result of a painstaking multiphase production process that adds a novel feature to Pejac’s printmaking practice: the use of the monotype technique. Each hand-painted monotype ‘stains’ the Korean Kozo mulberry paper with ochre spots that are meant to accentuate certain parts of the actual image, making the scene just a tad more atmospheric. It’s worth pointing out that the result of the monotype treatment is different every time, making each copy absolutely unique. As the Kozo paper goes onto the photopolymer printing plate, it is at the same time glued on top of Velin d’Arches cotton paper, rendering the print two-layered and thereby increasing its aesthetic value. Once the print has been pulled off the plate by hand, Pejac applies different shades of acrylic and coloured pencils to different areas of the print, which makes it even more special. In November 2002 oil tanker "MV Prestige" split in half and sank off the coast of Galicia in northern Spain. Carrying 77,000 metric tons of heavy fuel oil the structurally deficient vessel caused the largest environmental disaster in the history of both Spain and Portugal.

With "Desprestigio", Pejac wanted to create a dark souvenir to human ignorance and lack of environmental responsibility, while producing his 1st sculptural edition to date. The spill polluted thousands of kilometers of the Spanish, French and Portuguese coastline, strongly affecting the artist's native region.

Turning the disastrous real life story into a poetic sculpture, Pejac tirelessly hand painted and assembled each of the 30 exact replicas of the wretched tanker. From recreating all the details of the aged and weathered carrier, tenaciously stencilling its name (desprestigio – discredit / disgrace), to using a PET plastic bottle as a common example of a derivative product of crude oil, the artist developed a complex process using different techniques and setting new standards for his editioned works along the way.

In the words of the artist:

"This piece talks about the tragedy (of Prestige) that covered the coast of my country (and my region) in black [two decades] ago, and whose damage to nature is still visible today. I chose this particular case, but want to extend it to all the environmental tragedies that happen on our seas and oceans every few years. Desprestigio works as a dark souvenir of a fact that should not be forgotten: we must, and can, be much better guests on Earth. After all, this work is a message in a bottle.’’ ~ Pejac

Streetart. A mural depicting a black male figure sweeping with a broom has been sprayed/painted on the unplastered, bricked-up wall of a former door. The figure's head seems to be disintegrating, the pieces trickling onto the floor like dust. He is sweeping up this dust. A subtle, beautiful mural.
Info: "Pejac" is a well-known but anonymous artist from Spain. Pejac creates provocative paintings and humorous streetart. He works with all kinds of media, from oil and watercolor painting, charcoal and pencil to scratching, burning, stenciling and spraying, but he is also familiar with sculptures and installations.
